Hi, looking at buying a 2003 v40 2.0 T auto. Just wondering what the view on these is? Read a lot about t4s but quite a different beast and I can't find much else out there.

Depends on what you plan on doing with the V40. If your keeping it standard, then Auto's are ok with no real issues. However, if your planning on modding and getting the best out your V40, then I'd suggest you chin off the Auto's and just look at manuals.
As always, do your homework.
2014 V60 Polestar 6spd Auto :: Polestar map peak boost 17.4psi :: IPD 3" DP + 150cel :: Polestar 2.5" exhaust :: Paddle Shift Geartronic :: Black glass :: Maxton Splitter :: K+N Filter :: IPD Aluminium Top engine mount :: Brembo 6 pots :: 20" Polestar rims :: Brembo 371mm floating discs :: Sensus RTi + DAB + BT + WIFi :: D3S XENARC 6000k Active bending headlights
No plans for mods, although a manual boost control seems to be an option so I could be tempted by that but no further. So no particular issues with the auto?

Yes, quite a beast!........but for reliability you need the Phase 1 T4 before 2000.
The Phase 2 2 litre suffers the same as the later 83mm bore engines with split liners and the HG`s let go.
The Phase 2 engine has two boost control sensors so that says it all!
The Phase 1 81mm bore engine has Forged pistons and will take any amount of thrashing with reliability.

Actually just found a 2000 manual s40 t4 cheaper than the 2.0T- makes it an even harder decision! T4 is older, some wheel arch rust, higher mileage...but a t4. The 2.0T is a v40, to diet, no rust but will need more suspension work. Oh life is hard!

The 2.0T is 160 /165 bhp depending on year but is the weaker T3 engine.
Boost is around 8psi and can only be safely taken to 12psi with the manual boost controller.
Your proper T4 early model 1855cc has 11 or 13psi boost as std. depending on manual or auto and can be wound up to around 19psi and safely.
I ran my `98 T4 V40 for 3yrs on this higher boost with no problems .......but only 29mpg!
For the `98 model although some get an expensive remap giving around 237bhp you can get this by just using the actuator and NO boost controller.

The t4 I have seen is phase 2 so it would be the weaker engine?

The pre 2000 T4 is 1855cc 200bhp 81mm bore....engine CODE is T4
The T4 model 2000 on is a 2litre 200bhp 83mm bore engine......the engine CODE is T5 NOT 5 cylinder as in 850 0r V70 models but 4.
The 2litre 83mm bore..... 2.0T NOT T4 is as said a 165bhp motor which is engine CODE T3 the weaker engine.
