Front Suspension lower ball joints MOT falure!

    Hi folks

My beauty has just failed on a few things both of the the rubber covers on the ball joints have perished! Ive just looked online and all i can see is that you have to replace the WHOLE LOWER WISHBONE just for the sake of 2 poxy 10p rubber boots??? Surely the lower ball joints are removable to replace as service items???

Otherwise shes off the road until i can save up for new wishbones ( FUMING!!!

If it is only split boots, you might be able to find a suitable replacement. I have no idea what availability is like, but years ago when I used to muck about with 205 GTIs we were in the same boat, a split BJ boot meant the whole wishbone would have to be replaced. That was until someone found out you could get a suitable boot from eBay for pennies (think they were for a Morris Minor or something!).

However, you ought to check the BJ itself as it may be well past it now if the boot has let the grease out and dirt and water in.

Once the boots are split they let water in and it destroys the joint. Just get new wishbones and fit poly bushes to it before fitting to the car

C70 you'll need complete lower arms, V70 you can change just the ball joint.

Thanks guys another stint under the car then! Poly bushes sounds the way to go!!

The MOT tester was really young and inexperienced I reckon he claimed "the steering rack is insecure missing its bolts!" I asked him HOW I drove to the MOT centre with a loose rack. I got back home jacked the car up and checked the rack ALL THE BOLTS were there and it was solid WTF??? Fishing for work I reckon! Wont be going back there again!!

The C70 lower arms can't be poly bushed as far as I'm aware.
