Drove in to work today to test it out. The much lower might point point took a few miles to get used to.

Slightly sharper take up when feeding it in. You sort of feel the gears more when swapping cogs (must be the different oil). In crawling traffic 1st or 2nd there is less shunting surprisingly over the DMF (presumably less wobbling about). Not really run it out hard to notice any difference in engine pickup.

    Brakes better.

Chap who did clutch (did last one on T5) said all looked good underneath and that the existing clutch looked to have plenty of meat on it, but friction surfaces did look very dry and polished, so maybe why I noticed it slip a few times.

    New tyres next week.

Admirable efforts to keep on top of mechanical parts, a good read.

I am noticing that the gears are a bit more mechanical / knotchy (like an old Italian car!) when cold (especially first), this must be down to the alternative fluid now in it. After 10 mins though, pretty much back to how it was before. Rest not much difference as yet (not driving it hard), I'm sure it will spin up alot fast though when getting after it.

Just need to pull the whole drive-train out and put it in something half the size

Had another cracked rim repaired! Did look into getting two fully refurbed ones from States, but was coming in at 850+ landed duty / tax paid! and not paying 600 quid to Volvo!

    Very nice job anyway.

4 new tyres yesterday - went with the one Lee recommended - Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2.

Really good grip (huge!) and a bit quieter. Make the crappy Toyo's that were new when I got it seem like junk (low grip, harder riding and noisier!).

Might get the rims tidied up through the summer.

    Towing season starts tomorrow....

    Jon,

My gearbox feels exactly the same when cold. First gear is a real pig to get when you first try to pull away.
What I have found is if you leave the car idling for 5 minutes before you pull away, I know not everyone can do this so might take some forward planning but, it really works. First gear slips straight in once the thicker oil has had a chance to warm up a little. 5 minutes of idling is all it takes.

It is not such a pain as once driven off, unless into town or through area with lights chases are you will not use first again till it is warm.

Car feel great now, those new tyres turn off the dsc thing and pop in the mid suspension setting and it really hussles

I have used Castrol and Red Line oils on my gearbox. I find that Castrol works better when cold.

What grade of oil were you using?

Don't forget Jon and I are both using a Solid SMF (which looks like a thing of beauty ) and, therefore, a thicker gearbox oil to keep gearbox chatter from the layshaft down when at idle. Typically upgrading from the stock 75W80 to a 75W140NS! I don't believe Castrol manufacture a Non Slippery gearbox oil of the same grade, so you can only use the Redline.

TTV Racing - Solid Billet Steel Single Mass Flywheel, contains no moving parts or springs.

All vibration from the engine will be transferred through to the gearbox and will manifest itself as 'chatter' and can be heard when Idling, which increases with use of the Air conditioning. Once driving, the noise stops.
The amount of noise varies depending on the wear and amount of backlash in the gearbox. Using a thicker gear oil, reduces the idle chatter immensely.

    Lee,
I completely forgot about the SMF... I'm still on the original clutch so I'm using the stock oils.
I have a friend with a M56 gearbox that has fitted a SMF. Can he use the 75W140NS oil also?
