    Strange oil light situation

Apologies if you are across all forums and see this again ..trying to tap into all teh expertise i can

    Hi all, got an S70 2.5 20v auto ..goes like a dream …sometimes !!

A while ago the oil light flickered on my route home, went off , I pulled into a garage and let it sit for 20 mins then check oil etc ..all good, water level all good, no milky residue etc

Stared it back up and it was fine..drove gingerly home and again it drove as it should.

Then a week or so later after daily use it flickered on , stayed on and when I pulled over I could hear the tappets ticking … as I started to pull off main road , the light went out and it stopped ticking and all normal

This hasn’t happened for a while now but did again tonight ….light on, tappet sound then out and quiet and smooth. No ticking or knocking from cold start up either …anyone had this or could give a suggestion what it is

Again oil levels fine but one thing I noticed around the first couple of times was bubbles in the oil on cap . ..normal in the engine as I peered in ?

Bubbles in the oil would point to cavitation, the oil pump sucking air along with oil. Assuming the oil level is where it should be then, there's air getting in somewhere between the suction strainer, and the oil pump. This needs sorting a.s.a.p. as the engine won't last long being lubricated with air.

    What Harvey says.

1.8T VW/Audis suffer with a similar problem. Oil level normal and oil light comes on briefly. Switch off car, restart 5 mins later and everything is normal again.
The pickup strainer gets blocked and causes the oil pump to cavitate oil which = a drop in oil pressure, so the light comes on.

Whip the sump off and replace the strainer. Don't bother cleaning it, just replace it.

The new type is plastic not like the steel pipe assembly.
