New to Whiteblocks- a couple of questions, if you don't mind?

    Hi all.

I'm not new to Volvos or modifying, but this is my first venture into Whiteblock tuning, so thought this might be a better place to start than TB.

I've just bought a B5234T3 as the basis for my budget build (2001/2002, I think). It will eventually be going in my 1992 245.

Budget is tighter than a gnat's chuff, so things are going to be done bit by bit, as I can afford them. The engine will be getting aftermarket rods, but keeping stock pistons. I shall be making a header myself (fabricating stuff makes me happy), and using an HX35 or similar to provide boost. I already have one of those huge Ebay Evo intercoolers. Injectors will be sized accordingly, and MSII will take care of the engine management duties.

I want to get rid of the VVT, but am not sure on my options: is it possible to use a spare intake cam as an exhaust cam? If not, at what position do I lock the original exhaust cam in? Surely the cam as at it's maximum "variable" at highest rpm?

I also have a head from an early GLT (92-94), which I'm told is a "big port" head, but I can't any info out there in cyberspace on it, making me wonder if such a head exists at all. Would this head (with N/A cams) flow better than the later head, or not? I'll measure port volumes when I get the chance.

What are my boost limits on stock pistons?

Do I need to shim the block?

Is it worth going to the trouble of fabbing an intake manifold, or is the ME7 one okay? I don't currently have alloy welding facilities, so hopefully won't have to build one!

I appreciate that some (or possibly all) of these questions will have been asked before, but I've not been able to find them. I've also probably missed lots of more pertinent questions.

The glt head won't work - the whiteblock has 1 extra cylinder.
Me7 inlet manifold should be fine but with the extra room available, a tubular exhaust manifold would be good to see.

Boost limit is a bit ambiguous, as it's down to the mapping, I'm running 1.3 bar (around 18psi) on my stock M4.4 engine, but this could easily bend a rod if it boosts too low down the rev range. No need to shim, the 2.3 block is tough as old boots. As far as the VVT is concerned, Oblark is the man to speak to.

I think you'll find the " big port" head is a N/A head and the valve stem seals won't last 5 minutes before they become toast. I've removed the VVT pulleys on my engine build and replaced them with solid hubs.

The ME7 inlet manifold fits OK but the throttle body ends up under the manifold and a PITA to get at, I made my own inlet manifold.

Hi Oblark. How did you set the timing on the VVT cams? Does the VVT system advance the cams at high rpm or retard them at low rpm? I have to say, locking up the VVT cam on mine seems the best option at the moment, but I'm still not sure which way round the system works. Locking the cam in the wrong position could prove detrimental to top end power.

On my engine build with the twin vvt delete I've timed it up 4 degrees retard on the exhaust and 4 degrees advance on the inlet.

Exactly the same as mine, mine will happily rev to 8500rpm.

Wow! What's the spec of your engine? I'm guessing 8.5k rpm isn't feasible on a 2002 B5234T3 engine that will be internally stock apart from some H beam rods?

Mahle pistons, sten parner h section rods with arp studs, solid lifters, that's it really, just custom intake flowed head and a few more tweaks
