As Volvo recommend Castrol, I'd go with either Magnatec, or Edge.
Thanks stribo are they part or fully though?

Take a look at opie oils. I find the gulf fully synthetic good value. Plenty of choice.
Magnatec is semi synthetic..edge...pass.
Go for a triple Ester fully synthetic.

Another vote for Gulf ester synthetic here, although on a different car
I use the 5w/40 though, instead of 5w/30 recommended, as I didn't want to change the cold viscosity
Hot viscosity I upped from 30 to 40, in the hope that the higher temps I may get from enthusiastic driving will not over thin the oil. No oil pressure gauge so hardly scientific...but feels right))

Thanks I'll give it a look.

This is the one I use for my Subaru Legacy, I don't think it is triple ester as it's 40 quid for 5 litres

Valvoline and you'll never look back.

Looking at the age of the car and assuming its over the 100k mark, I would recommend this:
http://www.valvolineeurope.com/engli...maxlife_10w-40
Used the same in my S60 2.0T for 4 years/from 120k miles onwards till the car was sold with 192k miles. Never had to top up within the 8k service interval range.
My R is running on 0-40w with 6k miles interval. around the 4k mark I have to top up, less than a liter.

Thanks for all the suggestions. That miller's is expensive. I've got Halfords 5w40 fully synthetic in my shed from my previous car. Will that be ok. Will been thinner at cold be a problem ?

It's a bloody mine field lol far far too much information out there most of it conflicting. I think a decent brand 10w40 is my plan. Valvoline looks reasonable but is it cheap for a reason ?

is the recommendation for your car not 5w/30? therefore the Halfords stuff should be fine when cold in theory

(might be a bit biased towards Castrol that link...)
But I only increased the hot viscosity from the 30 to 40 for my application after doing a bit of research on whether the AVCS (variable valve timing, similar to your car) solenoids would be affected by the increase in viscosity. If you don't track your car or use it hard there shouldn't be any reason to go away from manufacturer recommendations IMHO

Yeah that is the recommended viscosity. When I bought the car in November the last service by Volvo on the invoice says 10w40. It seems 5w30 is a tad thin on higher mileage cars (103000) from my understanding. I do drive the car hard at times so I think the 10w40 is the way to go.I reckon I'll stick with what's in it. Valvoline seems to have a good write up and I can get 8 liters delivered for £45.

I never thought of that, those clearances will be like a bill poster's bucket by now mine is on 107k so no worries here either
That valvoline I use Vr1 20w/50 in an OHV/pushrod '84 car good stuff according to the rumours on the internet....! Price sounds good for your own spec

Yes, the Vr1 is a good stuff

Just to add I've gone for Mobil super 2000 10w40 semi synthetic. Should hopefully do the job. Thanks for all your help

Oh. It is my understanding that on a 2003 model T5, you should be using Fully synthetic, not part. As originally specified/recommended for your engine would have been 5w30 Fully synthetic. You can correct me wrong if you like, but that's what I was informed was the case.

It's really confusing. I rang my local dealer up and they said fully synthetic 5w30. But then i rang the dealer up where it was last serviced and they said they recommend 10w40 part synthetic. Iam just going to go wth what is in it as it seems to be ok. Doesn't burn oil and runs fine

That engine was made to run 10/40 semi synth.
It's only after volvo did a seal with castrol that full synth and 5/30 came into the equation.
My '03 t5 has always had 10/40 semi and always will.
