If it fires then dies immediately, that points toward an immobiliser/key problem.

Do you have a spare key to try?

Auto 'box light would be unrelated though, maybe you've pressed "W" as my missus found out the other day, that makes the light come on.
The light tends to flash with a gearbox fault

Gearbox inhibitor would prevent engine turning over at all if not in P or N.

My best guesses if no codes are either antenna ring on the ignition barrel not picking up the code from the key, or crank sensor.
Not sure if the latter would throw a code, but both reasonably common failures.

Hi Steve gearbox inhibitor still working ,mechanic is convinced it's gbox related I have had what you would call hard shifts but no excessive, trans fluid is brown in colour too ,was looking at replacement box as well as tcm's all cost prohibitive I'm afraid so its getting parked in drive till summer if cannot nail down fail it will be joing the many other c70's in the scrappers ,know I know why so many are there !,can only thank you for your advice over the last 7 months Steve ,if it goes for scrap there will be a nice set of BBS alloys and black interior going if you know any one who could use them ,thanks again fella

Would be a crying shame to see it broken.

Honestly, I can't stress this enough, a gearbox fault wouldn't stop the engine starting. Perhaps how it drives, but not whether or not it starts.
If your mechanic says so, he's just plain wrong.
As long as the engine cranks in P and N, the inhibitor is working.

My Money's on the antenna ring or crank sensor.

    Ah well.

So was it the fuel pressure regulator or the fuel pump relay?
