P1 V70 R wash, seized rear brakes and now handbrake useless....

I've had this issue before and will no doubt have it again, but to save the pennies, I need to fix it myself. So I washed the car, took her for a spin to dry the brakes out and then 48 hours later she won't move. Gently tried to release the rear brakes but the car was lifting upwards until something gave, and I now have literally no handbrake. Hoping it's just the shoes but what have other peeps experienced in similar situations plz?

It'll be the shoes - the linings will have separated from them when you felt something give.

Cheers for the above and I've ordered a set of shoes hoping that is the issue. It is still working but the lever needs raising higher and feels like only one side is working.

Feel your pain Mark, Gul's hand brake is shot, it will sometimes stop you rolling forward but it won't hold you from rolling back, handbrake cables are knackered and one of the rear cylinders is sticking, can't complain she's done some fair mileage in the last 2 years. Going to fully refurb the rear axle, brakes and delta mountings inner and outer in the next month or so, once I've gathered all the necessary parts

Yeah, Gul used to seize really badly after a good wash, so I started to put bags over the caliper/disc which seemed to work. I did have the shoes etc replaced but not the cables. I can't remember what miles were on the replacement clock when I sold her, but what are you upto now Adrian?

lol... I don't know as that one has stopped as well and she is in daily use, but in the 2 years she benefitted from the fitment of koni fsd's and eibach springs, aerial down switch, projector headlights (they were so cheap (brand new) I had to buy then it was a toss up which got them Gul or Olive), mirror backs are still black and just got hold of an 850r rear spoiler for her, possible jetex/bsr cat back exhaust system fitment as I have Olives old one spare on she has a full 3" system and any other bits and pieces as they come up, pcv is next on the list as she's getting a little oily, hope your V70R is keeping you happy, I was so happy that you got her back again.

I'd be almost willing to bet one of my nads it's not caught up my TDi yet!

As for the handbrake problem I have a solution...

Just don't wash it. Works for me.

I do keep an eye on your updates and all good stuff. I still look at Guls and wish I could have another at some stage. The R is OK thanks with a few minor issues, but driveable and I'll get things sorted at some stage.

Tackled this job yesterday and the shoes were fine. Couldn't see anything amiss, so a general clean up, new shoes, adjusted and all seems good.
