Some c70 questions for the gurus

Edit. Title is meant to sar for the gurus.
So i have just got this lovely saffron c70.
Couldnt help myself and took the airbox off and blanked off the recirc for some chatter. Removed the carbon canister lines. My next step would be turn boost up and remove the boost solenoid replacing with a mbc.
Any problems with this on the me7?

Also. Not looked under the car yet but what is the stock bore exhaust pipe size.

And do v70 grills fit as they seem to be cheaper to get hold of.

I will get some pics of the car in a thread tomorrow as its probably one of the nicest cars ive owned. For now. Might be a different story when the coilovers come

Ive been googling this and come back to this site a few times. Seems I can do it to around 14psi before it cries, at risk of bending a rod.
I may have to try this because at the moment it feels very gentleman like.

If its me7, leave the tcv connected to the electrical connection and fit the mbc in line with the actuator pipe. Less chance of it spitting it's dummy.

    Haha, good
So if ive got this right. Remove pipes from tcv but leave connected. Put boost controller between actuator and pressure side like normal. Block off return pipe.
The ECU will think its still giving just normal boost, so my fueling will be out, but ecu will only realise when there is knock. Will it retard timing to save itself?

    Nope...

Leave everything connected to the tcv and interrupt the actuator pipe with the mbc. Depending on the condition of your bps, you might get away with anything up to 15psi.
Safely, it'll do 12, maybe 13 but listen out for a high-pitched ringing/whistling noise as that indicates detonation from lean burn. You don't want to melt a piston.

    9psi I think.

I'll be honest - you could be walking a fine line with longevity here, a remap is pretty cheap now and it'll do much more for you.
A good map will adjust itself to other (non-extreme) mods you add later on.

Thing is i half do plan to get a big turbo. Big injectirs and a proper map. I just want it a bit more driveable for the mean time.

I remember saying something similar but it's really best to just chuck a decent map on it to start with.

There's a fair bit of faffing involved in getting an mbc to work properly and with a noticeable difference performance.
Plus, the older B5234t3 engine cant take boost spikes like the later ones.

Just sayin' - if you bend a rod or melt a piston, I did warn ya

Ok, i dont want to bend a rod. Another thought though. If low down torque kills rods, would a huge turbo not be more beneficial, so i would get full boost at more like 3k.

The setup you have should be good for 280 bhp, if you want more then turbo, injectors, downpipe etc.

A good map will stop you bending the rods

280 would be fine if it felt like that.
I think after the coilovers ill need to free up the exhaust, so it at least breathes a bit better.
If i were to upgrade turbo and injectors, how do i go about mapping that. Would that need a new ecu or can the standard one be adapted.

Me7 will map nicely through the obd port.
The Autotech map I have adapted itself nicely to the downpipe, turbo, injectors etc.
There's probably room to have the map tweaked again but it's got enough grunt and runs perfectly so I'll leave it be.

    16" will fit.
As for tuners, there's shemtek, kalmar union, BSR, Rica, and a few others.

If you can find a distributor, I'd highly recommend a map from Autotech (but then, that's what ive got so I'm biased)

    ME7 ECUs

If you have a later C70 T5 with a Bosch ME7 ECU you need to be carefull in not really changing anything at all around the interaction of that ECU with the engine, with or without aftermarket software. Those ME7s were very sophisticated indeed and react badly to not being able to fully control the engine if any changes are made, in particular to the standard TCVs and the recirculation valve. It is best to return them to standard whether you are running Volvo software or aftermarket.

As has been mentioned earlier I can offer you MTE's well received, Swedish written software in either stage 1 or 2 form. Stage 1 will give you outputs of 275bhp with 420nm of torque. If you fit a 'cat back' exhaust such as I stock from Ferrita in Sweden then you wlll get 280bhp with the same torque. I can also offer their stage 3 calibrations that will give 300bhp with 430nm of torque..... but only if you fit a good quality aftermarket downpipe with 100 cel cat. Ferrita have now stopped making their various d'pipes for the earlier cars due to a collapse in demand. If you can find a used Ferrita then that would help you, otherwise you do really need to buy or have made a new one of a very good quality to achive the specified outputs.

Currently I charge £395 for all stges of MTE software for the ME7 and later ME9 vehicles. You install this software yourself using MTE;s Softloader device as an interface between your car's OBD port and an older XP equipped laptop or a leter one operating in XP compatible mode. I loan that Softloader interface against a fully returnable deposit of £155. You can pay me either by credit card or PP.

In addition to whatever is said about MTE and myself and others here you might also find some valuable information at www.t5d5.org
