850R wagon tailgate lever (outside) not working?

It has always needed a bit of a slam to get the tailgate to close but today..with a dog in the back...Basil...Cypriot Tripehound..Found in a dustbin..The outside lever goes up and down but has no effect on the tailgate. I dropped the seat and crawled to the tailgate (inner) basil thought this a great game...excellent... and the lever on the inside works a treat so I can open and close. Is this a well known problem or do I just go where no man has been before so to speak.
    Any help much appreciated

As above, sounds like the link rod has come out of the clip.

Video of a repairing the latch on the tailgate but the later part of the video shows the linkages
