You can pick up a second hand 15g or 16t for around £100 - You'd want to fit a recon turbo at least if you were going to all the hassle of fitting one, else you risk more knackered seals, so budget another £250 for the recon. Plus labour to fit unless it's a diy job.

Smoking could also be worn rings, a blocked PCV won't help either so check that, but most likely the turbo after 140k.

It looks a nice car apart from the lack of MOT, good spec too, poss a CD. Def worth a punt at around £400 & with a bit of TLC would be great T5 saloon.

A new turbo core is 100 to 150 quid, it'll be like a brand new turbo then.

After people saying the life of a T5's Turbo is 140k miles? I thought they typically went a fair bit longer?

My 16t lasted over 218k miles but it had started eating itself by then.

That's really why I was asking...

I need to touch a large lump of wood, but mine was inspected recently (now has 140k miles on it), no play in shaft and no smoking on hard boost, so surprised to hear I could expect it to implode any day soon

i've got 2 turbo's for sale. 20t which needs balancing, & a secondhand 15g which i've never used so no idea on condition. £350 posted for 20t, £30 collected for 15g, both do have angled exhaust housings

It could but to be fair even the expensive ones can hide the gremlins well.

They're all money pits. It's a 20 year old performance saloon. At least when you sort out any mechanical gremlins & give it a spruce up you could have a car with a top spec & reliability. Then it'll be with around £1500. The T5 is still a fair way off a zero sum game but prices for good manual T5s & Rs are on the up- so get a good one cheap & invest imho. Either way it's still cheap motoring...how may other cars will perform as well as a T5 for similar money?
