850 Sunroof stuck open, help required please.

Hello all, I've just made a bit of an error, hadn't used the electric sunroof for a while and as the sun was out pressed the button (twice) to the full rewind position... Bad news, when trying to now close it moves forward to the 1/4 out position then retreats back to fully open.

I've just liberally sprayed with WD40 but still won't close.

I return to France tomorrow so any help in either rewinding manually, or reset, or easy repair would be great!

Can you access the motor by removing the interior light, as the thread below suggests...

Thanks - Managed to get it back, seems like it slipped on one side, a little manipulation and it wound in. Slide part continues to work OK but will probably not mess about with it for fear of a repeat!

HAs anyone removed, and more importantly REFITTED a sunroof mechanism? Mine has always been like KMB's - my passengers just get used to being asked to assist (minding their fingers!) . But now I have a spare car to split with a working sunroof so thought I would move it across.

BIG ISSUE is that Haynes suggest not doing it - get a specialist to do it - so I immediately thought of VPCUK since you are all special people and maybe someone has undertaken this joyous task before? Could not find any threads about it though. Can anyone advise??

P.S having posted this, I found acidicdaveys useful post on thread titled 850 R Estate - Pink Pus, with pics - nice one mate. I will have a go at this and post pics also. Good project for the Mech Eng. undergrad son in his Xmas break methinks. Woz :>)

I have removed one from an 855 in a scrapyard. The actual removal of the sunroof mechanism is dead easy, just a load of 10mm bolts, unplug the cable and it drops out.

The hard bit is getting the headlining out of the way, which didn't really bother me in the scrapper, and the assembly is quite heavy. If I was doing it in a car I cared about I'd probably tie a couple of ropes around the roof to catch it.

Refitting would be pretty simple, it just bolts on. Once it's in you can adjust the height by popping off the "scissor" trims and loosening the screws that are in slotted holes.

I never did get around to fitting it to my car. I put it off for ages because my car is a saloon. When I finally decided to get on with it I discovered that the existing unit had a couple of the aforementioned screws loose and that's all that had been wrong all the time. A previous owner had gone to the bother of drilling two small holes in the frame and installing a little clip to hold the leading edge down, when it could have been done in five minutes.
