Service interval - cam bellt...main dealer??

    Evening all,

As the missues is watching im a celebrity / x factor rubbish i thought i would ask a couple of questions.

I have a standard 2000 (face lift) V70se T5, Done 74k and its had a full Volvo service history from the main dealer,

Question 1. When does the cam belt need changing.

Question 2. In your opinion should I go to the main dealer for my next service or use my local independant Volvo specilist. I dont mind spending a few hunderd pounds but is it worth the difference.

Its not been serviced for about 10k now so im looking to get it sorted before Xmas,

Take it easy and thanks in advance for your help

    1) 80k I believe. So it'll be due one unless its been done before!

    2) As my rule, I say 1-3 Years old Volvo Dealer only, 3-5 Years old Volvo Dealer or Specialist and 5+ Years old Volvo Specialist. A full service should be circa £250 and a cambelt change should be £150-£175.

I would just get the cam belt done now for the money involved its not worth the risk.As for the servicing i would go for a volvo specialist as there is no good reason to use a main dealer.Hope this helps.

another vote to get it done now...it should be done at 80k or 8 years.

Just got mine done at an independant where I had the cam belt AND tensioner replaced. Dealers apparently tend to inspect the tensioner and decide "if" it needs replaceing which is another 50 squid.

For anyone else reading this I sugest that unless you have confirmation that the cam belt was changed at the 80k / 8 yr interval then to get it done now. Mine had allegedly had dealer serviceing and the 80k/8yr service was done despite it haveing only done 65k and I can tell you the cam belt had never been changed!

Only one valid reason for using local dealership.
You aint got a good local independant specialist.
I thought there was a light at the end of the tunnel,
it was just some fool with a torch bringing me more work

Exactly what I used to think when I had my Saab - wouldn't let the main dealer near it because all my experiences with them were crap. So when got the Volvo I was keen to keep to an independent - had the debate on this forum, got a few opinions and recommendations - slightly reluctantly decided to go to the main dealer as they quoted the same price (or cheaper) than independents near me for a 110k service - they really couldn't have been more helpful or friendly and when I spoke to the service manager on the phone he clearly knew exactly what he was talking about - I was astounded by the high standard and how affordable the work they did was and I wouldn't consider going anywhere else now.

Naturally it all depands who your main agent is, but H R Owen Colchester come highly recommended by me.

"New Shape" V70s come up for a cambelt change at 90k according to the book.

If it's not had a service for 10000, it would certainly be worthwhile changing the oil and filter and getting ready any other bits and bobs for the next due service at 78000. As regards servicing, I am happy taking it to my local independent, a;beit they have a good repuatation and I know people who have always been happy with the work. Dealers should be every bit as good, but, for me, twice as expensive. My 78000 service was a smidgeon under 300 quid for, in effect, 6 litres of synthetic, oil, pollen and fuel filters, and a general look around it, with no extra work done which I thought was a bit steep. At the time it was under warranty, so my hands were tied. Local indi quoted about 150 quid.

Plenty of good indis out there, many of which will have demonstrable standards of work and service.

Sorry mate I'm not sure if they do - I'm not a VOC member so I didn't ask when i was there - as I said they were nice people so I'm sure they'd be happy to discuss if you gave them a bell

In my limited experience I have found that most Volvo main dealers give a 10% discount to VOC members. I have only had good experiences with main dealers. On my 3rd V70T5 and past 2No S80T6. I ahve had most things go wrong and have had no complaints. My main complaints are with the policy on sale of used vehicles, I have always purchased privately. EG just purchased 2001 V70T5 37k £9k same car on main dealer forecourt £13950.00.
Look at the overpriced V70R new, look at the used prices still over the top.
