Unhappy 2005 S60R Windscreen Washer Problem

    hi there!

    I have myself a 2005 S60R 2.5T AWD with a strange issue.

I'm reasonably mechanically minded/able (I've done my own work on my cars and others for about 10 years, engine swaps, turbo converts etc.)

However this problem is fully stumping me.

Got the car from being in dry storage for a year and a half, needed new fuel and jumping but it has been fine ever since - excel the windscreen washers don't work

    So basically...

    1. The pump is fine - supply it 12v direct and boom, get fluid out of the jets on headlights and screen
    2. The fuse is OK - replaced with the 15A blade type - it has blown a couple of times but after its replaced it doesn't blow - pump still doesn't work
    3. Changed the stalk control on the steering wheel - from a known working car, still no luck.

So i'm at the point here whereby I've looked at the wiring diagrams for the car, the wiper motors on the headlights are said to be on a different fuse to the washer pump but from what i can see on my model it shares it.

Kind of silly but i have never tested if the head light wiper motors work when washing - obviously the windscreen wipers work!!

So i need to test them - if they don't work i will unplug them and try again - may be a short/dead motor causing power to ground out??

i have read that having a flat battery for a while could cause issues similar to this?? resetting some things may solve it? Battery is perfectly fine now after the jump several months ago when i bought it...

Short of that and a faulty CEM (please god no)

Any Idea's??? all help is appreciated!!!

Daft question - has a hose fell off somewhere & the water is being directed to the wrong place (underneath the car for example)

You should be able to hear the pump running when you press/pull/whatever the lever to activate the washers

the pump works fine - hence giving it 12v directly and every thing works.

it just doesn't activate when i use the wash function on the stalk control - there is no voltage at the pump when it meant to be washing - i'd expect to see battery voltage there but there is diddly squat, sweet FA.

subsidiary to that the wiring diagram shows yellow and yellow-red stripe wires which are present. i re-terminated the connector as the copper ends were rubbish so i thought that may be causing some high resistance on the circuit but it didn't resolve the issue.

could it be the board actually in the steering wheel? I have DTSC which works fine and everything else works fine excel the damned washer ARGH!!!

Maybe where the cablin runs through the bulkhead - apparently under the cover which covers the wiper arm assembly there is a big multi plug - which can sometimes get dislodged - dirty connections etc... haven't yet got to checking this as the wiper blade arms are stuck on the car too and I've lost my puller haha

so... i've checked the relay and its fine. there was a 15a fuse in the cdm which had blown, replaced it, it blew again.

disconnected headlight motors - fuse hasn't blown

pump still not activating so i am going to pull off the bumper again (well versed now) and reverse the polarity on the pump connections to see what happens

well reversing the polarity did nothing, put volt meter on the wires and it gets 0.02v spike when flashing the washers.

swapped and checked all the relays relating to washers e.g. front wiper, headlight washer, headlight wipers, checked the 15a fuse in the cem - fine, checked the 35a fuse for the wipers under the hood - fine (wipers work perfectly on all settings)

I am now fully stumped as to what it could be

The answer is staring you in the face!

All you need to do is obtain a wiring diagram in relation to the CEM and see what circuit that 15 amp fuse protects.
Once you know that, then you can then fault trace that circuit and find the dead short.

I have the wiring diagram - the only thing i can think it possibly is - is the circuit board which the stalk connects to in the steering column... but everything else still works which is the weird thing...

Any CEM fault codes? CAN or comm error codes?

Volvo would be able to diagnose a faulty CEM using a breakout box. I think after everything you've done, a trip to the dealer is in order.

no codes or anything on the car at the moment. had the fuel pressure rail sensor go but fixed that

does indeed sound like a trip to the dealer for me £95/hr diagnosis at reading wonder if my specialist (a bit cheaper) can do it.
