New to me, volvo 940 LPT - An issue already

So just bought a 940 2.3 lpt wagon. Driving it home i noticed a reasonably loud scrubbing noise from the rear end. The noise only happens when coasting and either stops or at least becomes much less noticable when on the power. I did pull the hand brake when driving and there was a reasonably large bang the first time I did but nothing thereafter..

    Any ideas?

    Firstly, Welcome to the Forum!

Get some pics up of your new purchase

The loud bang from pulling the handbrake on will be the the shoes hitting the stops inside the drum, I get that on my V70 (and 850) the faster you're going the louder the bang will be due to the speed of the shoes hitting the stops.

Jack the entire back end up and rotate the wheels to see if anything is catching underneath or in the wheel well. Also check the multiple heat shields along the length of the exhaust haven't fallen down and are rubbing on the propshaft (I had this on my 850).

    So,
    Thanks for the welcome.

A bit about myself, I am from Ireland but living in NW London atm. In the past I have had a few interesting cars from a VR6 mk3 golf, Mk6 Golf R, 2.4 NA 850 wagon (with 450k on it), UrS4, and now the 940. I plan on getting an MBC and boost gauge to up the power levels a bit and maybe put some stiffer springs on it becasue it feels like I am at sea while driving it at the moment.

a pair of ipd anti roll bars will help with that 'at sea' feeling coupled with springs you will have a much tauter car!
