    Just bought a D5, a few problems....

So after picking up my first D5 today I realised on the way home that there were a few issues.

Something sounds like it may have a dying bearing (maybe the alternator).. It gets a litte quieter when warmed up but it never really goes away.

ABS fault (though he did admit the rear pads need replacing)..

Handbrakes a bit high.. (Do these have indipendant handbrake shoes like the earlier cars or is it on the pads?)

    Steerings a bit vague..

Downchanges on the auto box seem a bit harsh in the lower gears.

I can't offer any physical advice mate but I wish you all the best and I really hope it doesn't cost you too much to fix up.

Yes, seperate shoes for the handbrake. Fearsome reputation on P2s for delamination and taking the hubs with them as it all jams up on the move.

"Anti Skid Service Required?" could be a few things, best get her plugged in when you get a chance.

The bearing could be anything, but unless you have a cast iron guarantee when the cam belt and tensioners were done... Well, you've seen Moose's post

Hope it turns out to be a good-un for you, Craig.
Guess you're not bobbing in to see me then?

Antiskid message a lot of times stand for a steering angle sensor which I hope is not in yr case cos its a few hundred quid.Shoes are the same as older ones but bad point they not adjustable on the drum which is a crap design and can be time consuming at times to get the right efficiency.I assume its the 163bhp which is a lovely engine.

If its the alternator it's fairly simple, end bearing swap and keep the original alternator.

Handbrakes are naff full stop. No adjustments in rear shoes unless retrofitted, you often need new handbrake cables too. With brake new shoes fitted mine managed 32% efficiency at mot... shocking!

Yes its the 163 bud. Getting a few messages, one about the Antiskid, another about the ABS and now a third about a transmission service required.. See what the local indy says tomorrow, if it's too bad then it goes back on Ebay.

There's an adjuster under the handbrake which should get you out the poop for now. Did mine but only lasted a couple months before efficiency dropped again.

More concerned with the gearbox at the minute tbh, with it being auto I can forget the handbrake until MOT time. Read a bit about flushing the gearbox out this morning and replacing some sort of cover on the outside of the box, not sure if this will help on mine or not though tbh. Waiting to take it to the indy up the road, tried this morning but apparently VIDA was down so they couldnt do a diagnostic on it. Also spoke with a gearbox specialist in Bolton who said he'd be able to tell me the best course of action with it once I know the fault codes. I'd be a shame to get rid because it really is a great car, except when the gearbox starts playing up.

B4 servo cover is a fairly easy job to do but at that age it's probably not affected.

Pete's a fair way from me and I wouldn't trust this thing to make it the way the gearbox is behaving at the minute.

Sorry to hear all this, I'm sure it's the last thing you need! These D5's can be fickle beasts, the gaytronic box just adds more complexity to the whole thing. When they are running well they are brilliant though. Good luck.

I must admit I was very impressed with it until the faults started showing up, I'd love to keep it if I can get the faults sorted. How long can I expect the box to last when it starts playing up (though I dont know how long it's been playing up for already)
