T4s, give me the low down.

So, I'm starting to give serious thought to dropping a T4 lump into one of my 400s.

Give me the low down on modding them, what can I expect for my money re mods?
I presume the 1.9 is the one to go for?
Are these pre ME7, ie with a throttle cable?
What 'boxes do they come with? M56? Any LSDs?

Still firmly in the ideas stage, will be a PITA job, but should be quite lively in a 1-tonne car

    Cheers

Ide say there a good option to go for I don't know much about them but tuning them seems to be the main problem unless ypu go standalone then you can have what you want.
Ide of thought the box would be a m56 and then you have a range of lsd diffs to go for.

I think what pete said... the smaller older engine is the better one afaik

I think they use fenix 5.1 engine management which isn't as user friendly!

There is a guy on one of the forums who knows most things about modding these if you want me to track him down?

Great cars and handle very well as well as being very quick. The blocks are based on the 5 cylinder versions with 1 cylinder removed.

Phase 1 has the stronger block due to being a 1.9 but the 2.0 phase 2 is still a better option if you wish to tune them.

Phase 2 comes with 420cc injectors as standard. Phase 1 has 312cc injectors.

Both cars use the Siemens EMS 2000 ECU but only the phase 2 can be custom mapped due to someone having a bench setup for flashing. Ask for help on T5D5 for more detailed info on this.

Both use the M56 but different ratios to an 850 and not interchangeable.

Returnless fuel system needs modifiying after 300bhp.

14T turbo as standard is good for 250bhp max.

Bigger turbos require a modified (chopped) T5 manifold.

Great on fuel compared to a T5. These cars are severly underated and I love them. The reason I now have an 850R is that the T4 will never be a classic like the 850 and you can't beat the 5cylinder sound. The 850 also has more space. But for a rapid, great handling economical Volvo you will struggle to beat a sorted T4.
    Grey 855R Manual. Totally standard.

    Cheers chaps.

Like I said, still firmly in the ideas phase though atm.

Well, hooefully it'll make for a sorted and rapid 480!

So, do they use a throttle cable?
Are the gearboxes themselves interchangeable with one with an LSD from an X70?

I'd love to have a bash at this, only heard rumours of one conversion:

    http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/foru...20165ce8ba056c

In that link to the 480 forum the guy says he uses T4 gearbox & driveshafts, although needs to shorten the shafts "where they join"?? As Pete says, box looks to be M56 so stuff is available for loads of money....my T4 didn't have much traction so I can't imagine a 480 would be much better

    http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/perfor...d-differential

The engine is a turbo'd version of the Laguna N7Q I think, as above meant to a £££££££ to tune or maybe just not as popular so less knowledge. I've heard Pyaap/Ashok (over on T5D5) mentioned wrt to tuning these.

I have an adaptronic ECU kit, maybe a way to do it would be to take control of the 1.7 in my 480 atm, then swap the T4 in there. That would get around playing with the Fenix stuff but easier said than done of course

Aye, I remember that orange 480 thread, but it just disappeared.

I dunno, I think the T4 is a Volvo lump, but think Renault used it for a while?
Kinda reverse of what happened with the 400 series engines.

    Frankie, don't tempt me.
Serious lack of money and space atm
