2.4 T5 auto box any good?

Can anyone tell me if a P2 2.4t5 auto gearboxes are strong and what gearbox is it please.I`m very tempted with an auto near me for sale it`s just the worry for the auto box thats stopping me.I have a nice exhaust and a set of greens sitting which would be the 1st mod for it.

Mine is a 2002 P2 with an Aisin Warner 55-50 sn box, they are supposedly crap, but other than being intermittently a bit jerky on engaging drive, and very occasional flaring between second and third, it has done nearly two hundred thousand miles, and it seems to take very hard acceleration in its stride. I think if you keep the atf fresn they are ok boxes.

I've not heard anything to put me off the 2.4 t5 geartronics.

Someone on here had one running 315whp for many years with no issues.

Same with everything else to look out for, if its a well looked after car, i wouldn't worry at all. If its a cheap, tatty car with a shed load of miles on it, they i'd be wary.

The good thing about autos, is that when they are going, its quite obvious. A 15 minute test drive should show any problems.

What usually kills the AW Boxes is filthy ATF . Volvo originally said the box did not need ATF changes, despite every other manufacturer who uses it having fluid changes built into the service schedule. Volvo belatedly put out a statement that the ATF should be changed if the car was used for towing or as a taxi , unfortunately lots of boxes were dead by this point.
Dirty or degraded ATF causes sticking solenoids and there is a known issue with one of the servo covers.
If you are shopping for a replacement box check the ATF is not black and stinky, it should be cherry red and smell clean.

Its a shame i can't remember the users name, although he did sell it a while back now and doesn't use the forum anymore.

I can't remember who did the mapping but it had a larger FMIC, full exhaust including dp and race cat and bigger injectors.

Have had two 2.3 T5 with the 5 speed AW 55-50 gear box and both suffered with dodgy shifting most probably caused by sticking solenoids due to crud in them.
The ATF change/not to change debate is not helped by the fact it's a pain to do as the gearbox design doesn't allow for routine maintenance. Most other gearboxes allow you to drain easily and allow you to change filters.
But find a good one and they are strong.

    No, it was definitely a 2.4 s60.
He made about 305whp at a dyno day i was at many years back, around 2010/11. Then he had a bigger dp and race cat fitted and i think he got around 315whp.

It's keeping torque low in the lower gears which is the key to longevity.
