    850 T5-R gear selector bushes

    Gents,

I tried to be a smart arse and order a couple of bearings to replace the now defunct ends on the selector cables. I went online, did some research and decided I needed a couple of 606-2RS (6mm x 17mm x 6mm) bearings so ordered them up, received them today and they're far too small to fit over the splindles on the box and are significantly smaller diameter than the cable ends.

So, I've since found this 'kit' on eBay but they look the exact same...

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-850-...-/320720988942

    And I also found these...

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/VOLVO-BRASS-...-/250730473309

But they too look much smaller than what I need... so I now wondering if perhaps the kits are wrong or I've buggered up and ordered the wrong size bearings or if these kits don't actually fit all versions of the 850? On that note, the local breaker has a couple of base model manuals in so I'll compare the cables and spindles tomorrow but just on the off chance I'm missing the obvious here... any ideas?

    Actually, just found this...

    http://forums.t5d5.org/topic/11240-n...inkage-bushes/

This guy has used 606RS bearings too but my cable ends are way bigger than that... they're probably nigh on an inch in diameter.

Noted further down that thread, a guy asks about P2 cars and the reply is they have 26.5mm outer diameter cables with a spindle diameter of 10mm... which is basically what I have.

Dafuq is going on here then!

I remember using similar on my MR2 Turbo, easy job and made a nice difference to the feel of the gear change... Don't suppose you have a nice shiny set like you used going spare Mr Mole T-5R (assuming they're the same as my '96 855 T5)?

Thanks guys... however, whilst I know there are several variations available be it bearings or turned brass bushes, the issue I have is my gear cables are much bigger.

The 606-2RS bearings as supplied in the 'MR2 kit' simply fall through the cable ends and their internal diameter is far too small to slide over the spindles on the gearbox.

Looking at Mole's images, my cable ends are much bigger and some research would suggest they are in fact the same dimensions as a Phase 2 car.

Anybody know if the M59 gearbox uses different cables to the M56?

What do you think to these? They look tempting. Is it possible these being brass and having no "give" in them, could it cause damage to the gearbox?

Having no give in the bushes won't have any adverse effect on the gearbox.

To update my saga, it would appear the gearbox on mine has been changed to a later model and thus, it has the oversize cables. I've just checked a manual V70 Classic and it to shares the same larger cables... approx 28mm external diameter with an 8mm spindle on the box.

Without having access to an 850, I can only assume the 850 has much smaller cables fitted and thus the bearing kit I ordered is far too small (both external and internal diameters) and so that as they say, is that.

Not really, think about it, they are on the end of selector cables which attached to a gear stick, which moves

On a note- to further reduce slack has anyone tried tightening the selector cables with the adjuster nuts?

The M59 on my old S70R used the smaller (MR2) type bearings/bushes, so I guess no is the answer.

The p2 cars are definitely different, I went through something similar trying to fix the worn out cable ends on the d5. Bodged it somehow in the end...

Turbo Dave - My 850 T5 has the M56 box, if these bushes you've bought will fit it and fancy letting them go for a bargain price then drop me a PM

    Cheers

Standard 850 next to P2, it looks like you may have p2 cables.

Re. the above, no problem at all... they're no use to me.

Maybe best check the dimensions on your gearbox first... just in case!

Christ knows what box is in mine now... going on what Yosser has put, perhaps its not an M59 after all. Logic would dictate it's a box from a V70 Classic of some description given mine and those share the same cables and splindles.

On that basis, from what I can gather V70 Classics also have the bigger cable fitted (Roughly 28mm outer diameter with roughly 8mm spindles) so that would certainly explain my issue and would explain why the 17mm x 6mm bearings intended for the 850 don't fit.

    KMB... PM sent sir

I don't think it's a box issue, as I can fit both bushes on my box, it's just the cable ends that are different.

From what you say it sounds likely he has P2 cables fitted to his 850?

Edit - I should really read the posts above and not sound like a parrot

Can any 850 owner measure the spindles on the box to confirm?

The bearings in the kits have an internal diameter of 6mm, the spindles on my gearbox are nearer 9mm and this is the same as a 1998 V70 2.5T I just checked a few minutes ago.

The big penny washer i removed from said V70 has an outer diameter of 27.5mm and in internal diameter of 9mm.... significantly more than the bearings as supplied which are 606-2RS with an outer diameter of 17mm and in inner diameter of 6mm.

    I'm confused now!

I assume, based on what has been discovered and posted above that 850 boxes (M56 and M59) have the smaller, 6mm spindles?

Mine doesn't. Mine has spindles nearer 9mm (I'll check with the calipers later) and thus has bigger cables to match... I've since discovered that this is the same as V70 Classics (or at least the 98 2.5T I just looked at)

When I say boxes, I mean as in the spindles on the shift mechanisms where the cables attach... but then what's to say these aren't interchangeable too?

just measured them, they are all 9mm, so to make it clear, the two gearboxes in the T-10, (1 m56, 1 m59) the gearbox I have out of the car and the gearbox in my T-5R all have 9mm spindles, so I have no idea where you got the 6mm from?

    Ok, I'm now confused.

If you read the link near the top, a chap fits the bearing kit ro an 850. The bearings are 606RS which have an internal diameter of 6mm.

Anybody bought the eBay kit and confirm the part number of the bearings supplied?

    This makes no sense!

I checked your bearing dimensions reference, all as per your initial note, see below:
