Should of known you had a thread going seeing as I've commented on it lol. Can't blame you for taking your company car. I've found with these cars there's so many easy fixes most of the time for things that have stopped working. Not sure if your aware but there's a person on YouTube called "robert diy" he has a video for just about anything you'll ever have to fix on an 850.

Just a question on the topic of the clutch pedal fix -

As mentioned I have the new slave cylinder and the garage time booked in a couple of weeks for new brake/clutch fluid and bleed. The problem of the sinking clutch pedal has only ever occured once and the car has since covered 100 miles without issue, but I don't want it coming back at an inconvenient time!

I am looking at how much additional cost it would add to have a master cylinder replaced at the same time as the slave cylinder and fluid change, I'm guessing that this would add an hour labour (£60) plus the part. So options are these:

    1. source and fit a new clutch master cylinder and fit at same time as slave (+£200)
    2. source new master cylinder seal kit & get this fitted at same time as slave (+£90)
    3. source and fit a second hand master cylinder and fit at same time as slave (+£80)
    4. stay with just the new slave & fluid change and see if resolved (no additional cost), if happens again then source and fit master cylinder as per three options above.

Not really sure whether I should go 'belt and braces' here or not, anyone had to make a similar choice and how did it turn out?

This thread is right in topic for me aswell. Slammed the clutch down and wouldn't come back up. So at the side of the road I tried to bleed it via the slave cylinder. Is there a master cylinder rebuild kit available. As this is the second time it has done this now

Are you sure it's not your slave cylinder, can you see any leaks Sparky?

Here's a link for a selection of cheap slaves (plenty on ebay too): http://www.buycarparts.co.uk/volvo/8...slave-cylinder

There are master cylinder rebuild kits here but not yet found any UK side: http://www.skandix.de/en/suche/?q=cl...cylinder&k=720

Will go off to try and find a UK master cylinder rebuild kit!

I'd go with option 4 personally, if that fixes the problem. Its not that i'd be trying to cut corners or save money, i would just spend that left over money on something else (servicing related).

Yes, perhaps pennies in the jar for a full suspension refresh... or anything that might appear in the MOT which takes place just before the clutch slave is fitted (doing it 3 weeks before due to give some 'repair' time)

Come to think of it I did have a dribble at the slave when this happened. Im starting to think that the bleed nipple wasn't tightened enough. Ill look at that.
So the master cylinders are normally pretty robust?

Just throwing a thought into the mix...

The piping for the clutch (on the 850 at least) goes under the air filter box and towards the back of the engine bay. I think there was a Volvo technical article about the pipe corroding under the box and leaking. Might be worth checking out. I know the one on my 850 is starting to rust.

That was the thinking behind this original opening post:

Update on this topic - Problem found, the garage went to fit my new slave cylinder and found that the hydraulic hose between master and slave was damp with a corroded end fitting and small leak. Glad this has been found. The new hose is ordered from Volvo for £60 and will hopefully turn up later today

On the plus side my car passed the MOT without any work (done a month early) so more 13 months on the road, very pleased!

Managed to pick up the Volvo OEM clutch hose, this was fitted along with the slave cylinder, along with a full bleed of the clutch/brakes and fresh fluid.

Covered about a 100 miles since, brakes feel much better and interestingly the clutch biting point is closer the floor and the pedal feel much more precise.

Wasn't cheap but very happy that it's sorted with nice shiny new parts.
