    Crusty Volvo 440 Turbo, Manuel

Being pretty hopeless with bodywork, does anyone have any ideas how to sort these arches out... can they be saved by cleaning all the crap off & re-painting or too far gone...?

Any advice/info about your own experiences would be much appreciated. I needed the car for the engine (to resurrect my 480), so it owes me nothing, but seems a shame to scrap it as there are not many about.

"Manuel?" Is that it's name, or is it a manual after all?

If memory serves, J, there are two, maybe three layers of metal there to cut out and build back up. Plus the back end of the inner and outer cills will be rotten, so MOT fail.

Probably looking at about a grand at a decent bodyshop.

That's why I ended up breaking an otherwise perfectly good 460 GSi a couple of years ago, even had working A/C and everything. Such a shame.

A bag of sand! Peas & rice!! I guess that is the price for a proper job. Don't fancy sinking that much money into it.

It's an auto mate but I would like it to be a manual, so named it Manuel. If I close my eyes & wish very hard....

you wont get away with cleaning them up mate, by the looks of it there two far gone, with the paint still being ontop of the rust it will have rusted through from the inside, they need grinding back and then cutting and welding were needed, wouldnt be to bad as a diy job if your not to bad with a welder and grinder, im not great with a welder and i would have a go at that on my own car. were abouts are you located? i know of a guy in wigan who owns a moblie body shop in wigan but has a unit, seems to be pretty good and dose a decent job, done a few bits for my mates

Thanks much much for the advice chaps! And yes I would be interested to find out how much work like this would be so will pm you both.

I've haven't got the car back to my place yet, I need to look at the rest of it, see if it worth doing. Same owner for the past 18 years...! (So it will be either a dog or mint )

No mate, I only found out it was an auto by guessing the missing part of the reg & looking on My Car Check, which doesn't give any trim info

Looking on that How Many left it could be a...

Turbo - 11 on the road
Turbo S - 1 (probably not this one is this is a mark 2 trim level I think)
Turbo GS - 6 (trim level doesn't exist according to parkers/wikipedia website)

Clear as mud then, probably the first one - lowered suspension, sunroof, spoiler, ABS

    //edit

just noticed comment on Wikipedia about GS spec...

the Si and GLT models were replaced by the GS, which had all of the Si's equipment and some of the GLT's, such as ABS

...so that must be a mark 2 spec also
