Went to check up on the R

I haven't seen the R for a while so I went to check up on the old girl today. Its always worrying to go over and check it because I'm scared rust and damp have set in but I'm really happy with this garage, it keeps the car well protected and other than dust everything else is fine with it. It will be 3 years next month since the car has been moved. As always it will get a service before it hits the road again and it will get a wax oil and general freshen up underneath. I will have to research a proper starting procedure as it hasn't been started in a few months, any advice would be welcome for that as I think its long over due a start and I don't want things drying up inside if that's even possible??

here's some pictures, I haven't tried to glam them up in anyway so here is how the car sits, dust included...

the P2 brakes will have more rust on them after one day of not being used!

    Thanks
    Martyn

    That really does look lovely

As for starting, I suppose it depends how long it's been sat for.
If it's been in there for years, then the petrol is probably well past it's best, so could be worth draining, or if there's hardly anthing in there, whack a load of Optimax on top of it.

Any engine that has been sat for a long time could have things stuck, so I'd whip the plugs out and drop a touch of clean oil down each cylinder to soak into the rings for a bit first.
Then I'd turn the crank by hand to make sure everything is ok.
A really good crank over with the king lead disconnected to get the oil back up to the head and into the lifters as they will have no doubt drained.
Then connect everything up and go for it

You may find it a little tappety until the lifters pump full of oil and free themselves up, but shouldn't take long.

It's just a model car to me. I don't want to drive it, I know that doesn't make sense to most. Once I get a house with a proper garage I will take it over and I will get it to the proper concourse condition that I want it to be.
    Thanks

Yeah anytime! I was going to wash it but I will follow my dad's advice and not bother, he said your just going to help introduce rust putting a damp car back in the garage. I will research waterless wash.

That's perfect, I will get this done over the summer! I did use to go over and start it regularly but after the crash I lost interest in cars

Might be worth getting them tyre savers aswell if it's sitting, help stop the tyres flat spotting. Or put the pressure really high aswell that works. Brand new cars can sometimes have 90psi in theyre tyres when they're just sat in the storage yards!

Great to see the car again and as expected, she look's awesome. You've made my mind up that my R is going back onto the BSR Optiflow intake, as she's back to standard after the previous owner changed her back. Personally, I wouldn't be able to resist driving your car round those great quieter roads that you have up there.

I agree it's not brilliant for the car, the way I look at it is if I was to drive the car it would be in worse condition than it is and it would also cost money to run. yeah I think the car will need some work done on it, but it did sit for years before I used it as my wedding car and it ran fine. if the car was to ever get sold I would run it for a couple months before selling it so that I know it's good for putting up for sale.
    Thanks

I think even those that buy Rolex as an investment still wear them to dinner parties and the like.

I'm trying not to be disrespectful and I hope I'm not coming across as such, each to their own and different things bring us joy. I hate it when my cars pick up marks and I believe cars can be objects of art and beauty but the urge to go and take them out and to have them running is greater.

That's a lovely example of an R mate and I can only say that I'm jealous I would love to have an R sat in the garage purely to look at, clean and drive to shows but unfortunately I can't afford that so have to drive mine. I did have my rare Impreza purely as a toy but that's before kids and a mortgage came along.
