    Lightbulb 2.0l to 2.3l possible ??

Firstly big thanks to Dangerous Dave who broke me out of my kitchen fitting duties yesterday and got me pulling engines to bits and got my mind thinking. Dave was after a sump pan and I have a 2.0l lump here that was left over from the donor car and after it not selling on ebay after many dangles on there (no surprise really) it seem best to rip the sump off it and send it daves way, so I dragged out the engine got it onto the engine stand when I noticed the sump already had a repair to it and not a very good one as some filler type muck was covering the repair on it didn't look good. At this point dave was already on his way over to collect said good sump, so only on thing for it, take the one off Frankies (niles's) old forged lump, which I've been dying to open up, so this block was swapped onto the stand and the good sump whipped off ready for Dave's arrival. Well this old block has seen some issues over it's time (before Frankie I add) as there's evidence of a bent rod or 2 inside and I don't think I've ever seen so much crud and crap inside and engine as this one

and the remains of a brush stuck in the oil pick-up pipe ( I've pulled it out abit just to find out what was clogging the pick up gauze)

So as the pistons have some damage from previous years and there is some nasty ridges at the top of the bores, I'm looking at block alternatives to start this re-build and this is where the 2.0l could be of use (provided that when I pull it apart it's good internally). I do have another 2.3l lump organised as a back-up/spares donor but was just wondering if anyone knew if I can take the 2.0l block (81mm bore) and fit the 2.3l crank and forged rods (90mm stroke) and build it up as a 2.3l,
or is there a major difference/problem that I'm not thinking of ???

I know that on the Porsche 996's - Autofarm can take the 3.4 engine up to 3.7 litres, then the same engine can be changed into 3.9 by using a crank & internals from a 3.6

Some comments here although not much

I have based my thoughts on the information that Harvey kindly put up in a thread recently, although there's only one 2.0l shown(from the Italian T-5R I'm guessing) and it's a total guess on the blocks being the same and as you say only one way to find out

Well the answer to 2.0 n/a to 2.3 turbo is no, well not without some serious machining, as the n/a block does have the additional under piston oil lubrication system, which explains why when Husky was on about oil leaking from the rear covers, that I couldn't understand what he was no about as I was looking at a n/a block that has no covers, so that will most probably be the end of that idea, well for the moment anyway.

Totally missed this thread (as was away for a while). was awesome to meet up again and have a chat, thanks for the tea The sump is all cleaned up, sprayed up and fitted (will put pics on my project thread at some point).

As for the 2.0 block, I forgot about the piston squirters on the turbo blocks.

Yep a nice afternoons natter over a couple of engine blocks and cup of tea, give me a shout if you about and at a loose end and we can have another mini meet.

as for the squirters, I could machine them if push came to shove, but then I'd have to mill the faces on the block for the covers and that's assuming I can then drill into the oil gallery to feed them. Just seems more effort than needed, sourcing another is easier and I have a plan B sorted, so we'll see if that works out better....

Indeed, we'll be up again for definite (probably the end of may now). Will see if I can make the smoke stop meet.
