Never had an issue with a standard Focus ST, tbh I expected a lot better. Once they're tweaked they can be a bit quicker but still not had an issue

The T5s are more powerful on paper but the Focus STs almost certainly have a better power to weight ratio. I would expect that in standard form the odds would favour the ST to pull away a little. On track there won't a comparison the handling of the T5s is terrible, even the ST saloons handle well.

You're blinkered if you think any R can keep up with a ST225 on track! They're a fine handling car.

One thing to ask, is the R in question an auto?

I wouldn't dream of trying to keep up on the twistys, especially on our local roads.

looks like the focus ST weighs slightly less than an 850 t5 so surely standard against standard on a straight it'll be close?

a standard st does 0-60 in 6.6 seconds at least a second quicker than an 850 t5

Manual is 850 is supposed to do the 0-60 run in around 7.2, the R in 6.8. Even the R won't overturn the weight difference in standard form. Saying that, the 850 is much better build quality than the Ford. Also, the STs have a bit of a boy racer image and I feel too old for that now. I still really like the old 850s, at the end of the day its not all about speed and drag racing from the red lights. I was very impressed with the interior and comfort of it and found the drop in quality from the 850 to V70 obvious.

id love to see anyone do those times in a standard car though, too much wheelspin usually around 8 seconds

In fairness the T5 0-60mph time is not as impressive as the in gear time, I think the taller gearing makes it feel (even if it may not be) quicker in the 30-80mph range.

I followed my mate in his wife's newish Fiesta ST the other morning and as we went onto the dual carriageway, a little friendly comparison was inevitable, very little in it up to slightly above motorway limit speeds... wheelspin at the start as it was damp allowed the Fiesta ST to pull 2-3 lengths, as the speed builds the T5 then hauls the little ST in, passing with ease (although my Oblark remap probably helps).

Main difference was that his Fiesta (yes I know it's not the Focus) has 5k miles and cost £15k, as opposed to my T5 which has 137k miles and cost less than ten times that amount, which feels pretty cool even if I cannot annihilate a blooming Fiesta from near stand still

In standard form, the Focus will easily outgun a standard P80 T5.
The Focus produces more torque (I think) and has much stiffer, modern suspension design meaning it can put it down off the line.
Not to mention the 6 speed 'box!

They really are a formidable wepon, and once mapped, shimmed and allowed to breathe properly will see off the vast majority of road going fast Volvos!

I nearly bought a brand new one years ago. Still wish I had sometimes.

I do still like to see their faces though when I keep with them for a little while on the motorway pull

Mine was able to keep up with my mates until he strapped the hybrid turbo and race cams to it with some other engine work at which point he left me for dust
