Depends which 16s.
This accessory brochure shows all the standard wheels and there's a warning next to the 16" wheels that 302s don't fit behind

my xc70 16's fit over my 302's even though the xc had 280's on

PLease correct me if I am wrong here but surely the disk diameter should not make a difference to fitting under a wheel as long as it is under the same caliper right?

302 discs have different carriers, probably changing the position of the caliper enough to clatter certain 16" wheels

as jamesy said, the calliper bracket is changed which moves the calliper 11mm further out towards the wheel.
