the father in laws s40 00>04 1.9tdi Renault engine is chuffing grey/white smoke and smells oil/diesel quite strong

has 187k on clock but has had headgasket done around a yaer ago with new turbo and not showing any signs of it again

it drives perfect and does not seem to be lacking any power

I have known the car for the last 9 years and its not had glow plugs and had a suggestion of and injector by a mate

the only thing I have done recently3 weeks ago but been fine up till now was clean the throttle body and valve underneath it out as was all gunged up

    any help advice much appreciated

Hmmm try and get it fully warm, at least 10 miles and see if it still the same. These won't get upto temp if left idling. I'm thinking glow plugs possibly, as they stay on for a bit helping to get a complete burn of the fuel. Without it you will get some unburnt fuel coming out as white ish stinking smoke.

If it does continue after fully warm then I would say you have a leaky injector. You will have to conduct of leak off test to confirm or just get them reconditioned anyway.

Might be worth a Terraclean for £100 before you go pulling the engine apart. If it's clogged injectors that are not spraying properly then a Terraclean will sort them out and clean the rest of your engine and exhaust in the process. Just refurbing injectors will do just that, nothing else and will cost the same money, if not more.

Worth a punt and will only improve driveability and reduce emissions if nothing else.

TBH mate the cars scrap value as it stands, so if the rest of it is o.k., you may as well stick another lump in it. I bet if you do go for a second hand lump, it's done between 80 and 90K miles.

When you say the crank is pressurising, what exactly do you mean?

    Possible causes r:
    piston rings
    valve guides
check the breathers 1st if ok as above.
