OK guys, the new one was fitted today at home by my trusted mechanic friend who is resposible for its annual maintenance. Seems I caught the old one before it let go completely, as there was very little dampness in the foot well. Thanks again for your help & feed back. Have another niggling fault which you may have knowledge of, so will make a fresh posting.

Glad you've sorted the matrix Dave but it sounds like the car is on it's last legs.....I can only offer £1400 for it now as you seem to have let it go somewhat
