Back and a new car D5

Well got back from afghan and decided to treat myself last week to a 2005 S60 D5 SE it has some minor mods such as a tuning box, K&N Panel Filter and a boost gauge which I think is wired in wrong as it barely moves what psi do d5's run standard. I have ordered poly bush for front strut brace and I have ordered a rear strut brace. would like to no if a new inter cooler would make a difference and something about dpf on diesel's making them quicker thanks.

Nice motor. You should see about 1.7 bar but no vacuum. Any idea what the gauge is plumbed into? The last one I fitted went into the egr pipe.

Welcome back from the hot and dusty s@@@ hole! Glad you made it in one piece!

The fact the car has already got some minor mods concerns me. First things first, start as you mean to go on.....
Get the car serviced, regardless of what the service history says, even if it's just a basic oil and filter change. Make sure your flush the engine oil too as you want to rid the engine of as much contaminants as possible and just dropping the oil will not do that, especially on a diesel.
Remove, clean and lightly re oil the K + N filter. Remove and clean the MAF with carb cleaner as it's bound to be contaminated with oil and dirt from the air filter.

Remove, degrease and jet wash the engine...that way, working on it will be more pleasurable rather than getting covered in crap every time you touch it. It will also make oil leaks easier to spot!
With the cover removed and the engine clean and dry, you can now go over it, looking for any out of place hoses, clips and even wiring connectors not refitted correctly from previous maintenance. This is your opportunity to check the vacuum hoses and make sure none are split, cracked or showing signs of age. If in doubt - replace!

Read the codes on the car - note them down then delete them all. They may be old codes and not relevant. Then after 100 miles or so, re read the codes and see if any of the ones you wrote down reappear. If they do , then you know you have an issue.
This to me seems the most logical way of attacking your (potential problems) before you go ripping out the boost gauge.

What's the mileage? If around the 100k plus mark! then you need to check the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system is not blocked. This will cause boost issues if blocked. Simply remove dipstick slightly on a warm engine whilst running at idle and see if you get signs of smoke from the dipstick tube. If so, it's blocked and will need attention. Expect to pay around £150 for new parts from the dealer.

Regards the DPF (diesel particular filter) these slow the car down, not make it faster! Think of it as a catalytic convertor for diesels cos that's basically what it is. Unfortunately for you, DPFs are the Achilles heal of modern diesels and pretty much the main reason I will never buy a modern diesel. Over time they need to regenerate to clean themselves, unfortunately hapless owners don't follow procedures that are explained in the owners manual and over time they often clog up. Main symptoms are warning lights on dash, loss of power and erratic revs. Main dealer costs are astronomical to fix especially if they insist on replacing it....expect a bill to average £2500 for replacement!!!
You used to be able to remove the DPF, gut them, refit and have software delete the DPF sensor.....unfortunately new MOT legislation put an end to that in March this year. If your car has a DPF fitted from factory and your sensor is not fitted/deleted or the DPF has been gutted then it will fail. You will get slightly more smoke once deleted and increased torque and increase in BHP. shame!
The other thing that can cause you problems is the EGR valve. In some cases these can be blanked off. Those that are electrically controlled I'm not sure, most are vac controlled. Easiest thing is to just replace the dam things. There not expensive and relatively easy to replace, thou I would insist on a garage doing it if you not confident on the spanners. They are connected to the exhaust side of things and due to there nature they can seize and be a real pig to remove sometimes.

    Hope that helps!

Ps, nice car, nice dark alloys. Lose the tow bar thou and get a nice lip for the tailgate!

Nice looking motor. First thing id do is remove the tuning box and bin it. They are bad news. If it dose have a dpf the mot tester can test to see if its been gutted or not.

just been doing some research and I am going to take it off and give it a blast threw with a jet washer as i just found it is now illegal ha. With the tuning box I am looking at getting and intercooler then mapping it as it worked well on my misses golf will this have the same effect as i no volvo intercoolers are good.

Its very common for the intercoolers to fail on the d5. The d5's seem to respond very well to remapping. If your car is the 165 it wont have a dpf. Im sure its only euro 5 engines that have them

What are you going to take off and what is illegal?

Volvo inter coolers are good but FMICs are better!
A remap is a good thing also but you really should be doing a stage '0' first before ploughing money into expensive mods. Get the car running sweet and strong first. Cover ever eventuality and leave no stone unturned before you mod. Modding exposes any weaknesses and you don't want to have to go down the nasty route some ppl have had to be removing mods to cure other faults first! That's double handling. You don't know anything about the car as you've only just bought it, so it makes sense to get the car running tip top first.

Don't rule out uprated ARBs in the near future. Worth at least 30bhp through the twisties lol.

Even with my front and rear braces, polybushed engine bar & factory lowered sports suspension - the D5 still handles like a bit of a boat.

Uprated shocks are the only way to get it to handle well. Mine had uprated shocks when i bought it and the handling was great. Like it was on rails but the ride was a little to hard for me so i put std shocks on

Yes been pricing up getting the standard shocks uprated to the 30mm drop on standard shocks with the ones on parts for volvo with IPD top mounts and IPD HD drop links then poly bush the hell out of it that is next months play but stage 0 this month then maybe a intecooler and remap wondering whether to get an exhaust made as 534 quid is alot of money for not being turbo back.

is there anyway to get a t5r induction kit to fit the D5

Considering the turbo inlet in pretty much the same position as the the R, I'd say yes - but you'll need the R maf to turbo pipe.
