Any ideas what this is??? 53 S60 D5

    Howdy knowledgeable Volvo folk.

I'm hoping somebody can cast their eyes over these pics and tell me what it is? It was spotted during a service after removing the engine under tray and i'm stumped! It's a length of pipe with a hose going in and another coming out, some sort of valve and a wire going up to the top of the engine with a 3 pin plug on the end, which isn't connected to anything. My only thought is some sort of heating element perhaps? I'm guessing it isn't standard from Volvo.........
It's not causing any problems which is a plus, i just wanna cut the unsightly wire off which is cable tied to the engine.
    Cheers for any info.

Looks 'home made'. Doesn't look like genuine Volvo part.
    Sorry I can't help.

It does look like a block/coolant heater

Here's a 'Defa' one - it's just a heating element inside a elbow or tee-piece to install in a coolant hose

Next time you drain the coolant pull it off and check whether it works or not. Seems a shame to chop it - nice selling point in the future

Ok so I wasn't too far out with my conclusion. So I'm sorted if I have some towels to dry!
Seems like a strange thing to cobble together in this country, it's not like the temperature drops enough to freeze the antifreeze. Cheers guys, I shall cut the wire off and forget I ever clapped eyes on it.
The same previous owner had a HID kit installed but instead of using a canbus kit preceded to install loads of wires and relays to bypass the faults that inevitably arose as a result. Now my fog light switch controls the headlights, and vice versa lol
