Enlighten me... LCD display illumination!

More slightly daft questions for you good folk of the forum...

I was driving around in my 855 T5 GLT and the trip computers/mpg/temperature etc long LCD display under the clocks does not illuminate at night. Although as it was below 1°C it did have the small orange warning for ice, the LCD all works fine and can easily be seen in daytime.

Does this mean this part of the clock assembly never illuminates or is there a button somewhere (yes I really should check the manual first), if it should be illuminated how much effort is it to put it right?

I should add that I did find the brightness slide which worked fine... Just no light behind the LCD bar

Check these bulbs on back of the clocks. Need to remove dash top.

As Saaamon says, two bulbs in the back are probably the culprit.

If you go down the LED route, you'll need some wide angle LEDs otherwise you get a couple of bright spots in the display and the rest of it will be dimmer.

Thanks chaps, looks like some more bulb changing to fiddle around and sort, I'll replace with standard bulbs rather than LED's!

Is it much of a pain removing the dash top and clocks?

I need to do mine I swapped the computer out at the weekend and there no light to the new unit.
As for the dash top it's a easy enough job.
There's a screw above each of the air vents middle ones and drivers just remove them and you can get to the screws.
Either side of dash there a plastic cover remove that and the screw behind them.
Theres also two screws in the glove box area cannot remember is the non air bag tops need the glove box out or not if so remover glove box the two arms split from the lid get a small flat head down the side of them and lift the arm up.
last 2 screws are where the speedo clocks are
After that slide the dash top towards your self.
Re fitment is the reversal of the above but remember to make sure it's clipped in near the left middle vent you'll see what mean

No it's easy, start to finish half hour job if you drag it out.

Yeah, the 850 has the same procedure, just made more difficult by the fact it has no doors!
