They certainly did make a factory manual 3.0 24v. I was just looking at one.

That is a secondary air pump by the looks of it (part of the secondary air system or SAS). Apologies I got it wrong before the edit - it actually takes air from the airbox and pumps it into the exhaust for extra emissions control. They also fitted them to the later 850/x70 series. On my 850 I just blanked the exhaust and airbox connections and removed the pump as it was full of water and didn't work, you just have to leave the relay connected so as not to throw an EML.
Also saves some weight as it's quite heavy
The TCV looking device and loose blue pipe is possibly for the actuator on the exhaust for the SAS (looking at it closely it probably is, would need a closer pic). The TCV thing uses the intake vacuum to open the exhaust actuator under certain conditions set by the ecu.
Again I just disconnected the pipes and left the TCV thing attached
Hope this helps

Looking at this pic of another engine bay you can see the actuator and the pipe running across the top of the engine.
Looks like someone has removed it already on yours (just hope they've blanked it off on the manifold...)

I got it the wrong way round, it pumps air into the exhaust for emissions purposes. My 850 had it on but for some reason my V70 T5 doesn't, the connectors on the airbox and DP are there but with blanking plugs on.
Apparently it is also supposed to help heat the cat quicker

Certainly not on my T5. It must be an NA component.
Car seems fine without it. Also read and reset the fault codes earlier. Lambda light is no more..

Anyone have access to the parts lost for my car. I think I've figured out why it's so slow to accelerate. I think the kickdown isn't working.
I believe that my car doesn't have a classic switch attached to the the cable, but it is part of the TCM for my specific car. Would anyone be able to find out if the part is available on any other cars to help with my EBay search.

Just caught up!.....that air box pump for the emissions is only used on start up and when the cat. is hot enough it turns off.....it will use more fuel if it doesn`t work on cold start...it makes hell of a noise when starting.
2.5 engine B6254FS was optional auto / manual
.............. B6254GS was manual only
3.0 engine B6304FS/GS was Auto only
I owned the 2.5 960 Aubergine colour Saloon auto and it has a lower final drive 4.25 IIRC and is so quick off the mark it is untrue....30mpg @ 70mph.....19 around the houses...
You may find the rear grind is the drive shaft joint at the wheel.....the diff is fixed and has the transverse Glass Fibre wide spring with Multilink Suspension.
Because your showing the red arrow on the dash ....its` in Limp Mode and 3rd gear only......yes, it is the PNP switch but very very difficult to get at as it is on top of the box and no room to get at properly.......
Best thing to do first is push the gearlever forwards and back wards fairly quickly for about 20 times through it`s full movement.....Yes, 20 times as this aids cleaning the switch contacts for the different modes.......when the light goes out and all gears work again don`t go near the E-W-S switch just leave in E and it will be ok........cheap fix unless you want it as it should be!
Keep the throttle body clean as it aids quick take off...

According to a volvo tech manual the kickdown switch is attached to the firewall bung behind the throttle pedal. It is part of the throttle cable so you would need to replace the whole thing if the switch was not working. Probably best to test it is working with a tester just to make sure.

The middle link in post 34 has a diagram & some info on adjustment for kick down cable
JUDGENINJA (Sunday 11th January 2015)
There are no kickdown switches on the 960 variants of auto........the adjustments in the middle link refer to 850/940 etc.
The reason there is no kick down facility is because there are electro mechanical solenoid valves which control this and the control module is mounted up under the dash on the left hand side of the brake pedal box........it has a type of connector like the OB11 ones.....nothing is adjustable as it is this module that controls the solenoid valves in the box.
The vacuum servo in line with the throttle cable is to do with Cruise Control and the only adjustment is that the throttle cable must be adjusted to be taught and under tension when idling but must not affect the position of the throttle mechanism. It is adjusted by the nut on the vacuum servo.

I guess from the username you are the expert, Keith, but the link below states....
http://caunter.ca/volvo960/ip14814.pdf
KICKDOWN CABLE
NOTE: Depress accelerator pedal. DO NOT turn throttle pulley by
hand or adjustment will be incorrect.
On 940, fully depress accelerator pedal. At full throttle,
distance between cable stop and cable casing should be 1.98-2.07" (50.
4-52.6 mm). See Fig. 7. On 960, adjust cable until it is just pulled
gently tight. Adjust kickdown cable if it is not within specification.
Which made me think 960 autos had a kickdown cable
edit
that said, mention of a kick down cable is absent from the link below, which is a bit strange. Maybe there was an early 960 auto with a cable operated kickdown? Answers on a postcard from USA..?
