    One leaves and another arrives...

So the excuses will start..."though you were scaling down your collection of Volvos"....."thought you wanted to save money by buying a diesel"..... La la la I'm not giving you lot any sort of justification...(maybe tiredness. It got me into to trouble with the V40TDi)..

Anyway within 2hrs of the S40 being collected I picked this up based on 5minutes of viewing. To be honest I actually don't know what I have bought yet....

So it's a 3.0L 24v SE. It has 184000 miles. All the electrics work(couple of bulbs). Engine sounds rock solid.
But...... It looks like there is something wrong with the transmission/propshaft/rear axle.

Put your foot down and the car doesn't take off like I think it should. There is a grinding sound from the rear when turning left (leaning on the right rear wheel).

Interior wise, some of the door cards have wrippled up a bit...

Lacquer has gone from the roof and each corner has been scraped...

So now I need to sit back and let you lot tell me what I've bought....

Now I just need a bit of snow!!

Door cards are common, they all do it. Volvo actually launched a recall/service campaign and renewed them all but that campaign has long been withdrawn now...

Not sure about the noise from the rear, they're usually bomb proof, I guess it goes without saying that you should check the rear diff oil. When I got the 940 it was one of the first things that got checked and subsiquently renewed!

Despite the 204hp they're not the quickest off the mark tbh and fuel wise they're good for around 22-25 mpg in the real world. That said it will do 130 all day long

I see it has a black faced SC-805, so if all else fails there's something of value to sell lol

How the hell did you spot that..?? !! (But yes it's the black one)
I've had a 760 before, so I sort of know what I'm expecting regarding traffic light fights, but a push bike could beat me to 10MPH

Volvo nutter, you can see it in the interior shot. I've also got the sales brochures for all Volvo's from around 1982 to 1999

Just a thought but have you checked the transmission oil, one thing about these being a little slow to pick up off the mark is traffic light gp's sees you as an outsider only to start with

    Gearbox or diff?

    Gearbox would be Dextron III

    Diff should be 80w90

+1 to Andy'suggestion. Check the gearbox oil & header tank for signs of oil/cooler contamination. These old 3l can split head gaskets & still run strong, just knacker everything else before the engine finally seizes. Was looking at a few last summer & that was the general consensus from the Volvo mechanics. Good luck with the old beast! Cheers, Morgan

looks rather nice. I was contemplating a purple 960 royal a while ago but let it slip. and is a black face 805 rare/of value? I got one in my T5R.

    Looks nice that

Good to see lots of RWD stuff bobbing up on here!

Potential problems on 960s as already said - head gaskets and split ATF cooler in the rad causing coolant & ATF to mix.
The front suspension is mainly 850 based, so expect the usual problems there - droplinks, top mounts etc.
Flashing orange arrow on the dash, along with mode selector by the shifter, usually points to a buggered PNP switch, which will lock the 'box in winter mode. Meaning it will lock out first gear.

A clunk when taking up drive could be the propshaft centre bearing, although these tend not to get as much hammering as 7/940s as the diff is fixed to the body as opposed to moving up and down with the axle.

Erm... That's about all I can think of at the moment.
The rest of the car is pretty much bullet proof TBH, the last of the proper battle cruisers!

Being the 3.0, it should have a G80 locking diff. If it has - epic fun in the wet!

T6 it, you know you want to.
I wanted to with mine, went and bought an S80 to rob of it's lump, but couldn't bring myself to break it, so went in an entirely different direction and put a staight 6 diesel in it instead!

Ok oil cooler is interesting. I had noticed the colour to bit of an Odd dark colour..

I think I'll need to do a compression test sometime quickly.

Anyone know if there is a worship Manual knocking around either in print or on the web.
There isn't a Haynes for my model.

Compression test was done today. 150Psi across all 6 cylinders.

Spark plugs looked like new too.

Found a dodgy pipe laying across the engine:

It goes somewhere here. Looks like a TCV from a turbo car but this is an NA.

    Anyone know where it goes???

    Also, what this is????:

    It doesn't connect to anything.

Also I'm hope this oil is just remains from the last fill up.
