    Passenger airbag

As a trial run for replacing the keyless entry receiver buried under my '98 C70 dash, I removed the dash in my currently SORNd '99 C70. Despite me being ham-fisted it was easier than I anticipated, especially when I discovered there was no passenger airbag, and appears never to have had one. I then checked behind the glovebox in the '98 and it has one there.

If I'd looked at the dashboards in both cars more closely I would have realised the difference. The '98 has "SRS AIRBAG" embossed on the passenger's side of the dash, and the '99 doesn't.

So I am rather surprised, with Volvo's reputation for safety above all (and this particular '99 C70 having cost £28,600 new) that it seems the passenger airbag wasn't a standard fitting. It was a luxury car after all!

No, my '98 C70 T5 GT doesn't have a passenger airbag, though it has seat airbags.

I'm surprised you can remember that far back.

Thanks folks, I have now learned that all Volvos are not created equal when it comes to passenger airbags. My old diesel Toyota MPVs had 'em so it never occurred to me that a near-£29k Volvo wouldn't.

I can tell you this - the passenger airbag's a bloody nuisance when you're trying to get the dash off. The connector to the airbag is not easily accessible, you need three arms!

Also discovered my centre speaker looks duff - the magnet had come adrift and taken the clear plastic cover (for the voice coil?) with it.

Removing my remote receiver I tried two other receivers (one known working with two working fobs) but had no luck getting the keyless entry fixed. In the end I just put the original back in. Doh!

Ah well, I suspected it wouldn't be as easy as swapping the receiver and fobs but it was worth a try.
