Popped into the local Volvo parts dept. on Saturday, picked up new update disc for Sat Nav and got a low down on the driveshaft, could be up to 2 weeks before delivery, should get it done before Christmas anyhow, or just after.

Fitted 2 new driveshafts an bottom ball joints to mine last night. 1st and 2nd gear noise is gone!

But while I had it in bits I decided I didn't like the wheel bearings! Nothing really wrong with them but not how I want them to be! So I'll wait until were back from Shetland in the new year and put a couple of new ones on then.

Happy new year every one, hope you all had a good Christmas, just a quick update about the driveshaft replacement, had a call from Volvo just before Christmas, the driveshaft still not arrived from Sweden, car was booked in end of November, maybe the part is pretty specialist for the R's, hope to get it done January sometime. 2 new tyres are needed as well and hopefully body work repairs after that so the R will hopefully will look as good as new after 12 months and 30k worth of miles the old girl deserves it.

Hi Paul, S60r. Ok finally the driveshaft arrived on Tuesday and the cars booked in with Volvo dealership for replacement tomorrow (Saturday). I hope this will be the end of it for the time being as over 12 months of ownership i have replaced the angle gear, drop links, axle bolts and odd bushes here and there, but anyhow the big thing probably to be aware of and this maybe just the Brighton Dealership is the fact what seemed a straight forward part is very hard to get hold of, some 6-8 weeks from Sweden. I didn't want to trust aftermarket part from eBay suggested in fact by volvo parts, due to the issues in getting the part, i guess it must be specially developed for the R' so I was prepared to wait although the clunking from 1st to 2nd etc is pretty bad now. The part being Volvo is expensive but labour is OK. So with some discount will pay out about £500.00 tomorrow for its replacement. If you know you need to get the job done in the near future bear in mind the wait!, maybe test your local dealership with regards to availability and despatch times and order the driveshaft sooner rather than later

I have this issue, albeit on a D5 and the clunking also happening in third and fourth. Having previously thought this was going to be a gearbox swap, i'd obviously much rather change a driveshaft.

Just a few questions Terry, does this 2-clunk happen first on selecting a gear, then lifting the clutch up to take drive(while moving not stationary)?
Is it louder the harder you change gear?
Does selecting reverse also cause the clunk?
Finally, did the garage happen to mention wether it was the inner cv joint or the outer of the driveshaft that was at fault?

    Cheers

Thanks Lee, Car feels great actually and drives really well its taken 12 months but with some proper servicing i have broken the back of it for the time being, Volvo technician commented on how well it drives which is good. I need to get it into the body shop and i have a quote for 800.00 which will deal with all the minor scratches and stone chips and some other minor body repairs which i will do in March so after that it should look and drive as it should. Well until the next thing of course LOL

Paul just to answer some of the other questions in your post, i think i may have covered the part issue in the last post:- Cluncking was on gear change 1st, 2nd which was more prevalent and also reverse as clutch being released whilst taking up drive. Whilst driving no issues noted. In relation to the question in terms of louder the harder changing gear, no difference noticed from harder or lighter gear changes., probably in the earlier days if your feathered the gear change it did't clunk but it got to the point around October/November it was happening all the time. In terms of part the invoice stated axle shaft O/S.

Sorry as a final note, which i have just noted the invoice does say axle shaft exchange, which implies as my angle gear replacement in April 14, that this is a volvo refurbed part!!, i will call them Monday about it though to clarify!
