Volvo V70 T5 auto 1998 not selecting gears

    Hi all,

My motor refuses to engage gears and when it does it drops to what appears to be in neutral position as the revs drop, prior to this it never slipped just started to knock into 1st gear then R and eventually never selected gears and felt me roll down a hill. The trans oil was dark and smelt slightly burned however I was lucky it was free from any metals or debris, changed the oil 3lts at a time x4 (in total 12lts) this did improve things allowed me to drive for a short distances in R 1 2 3. After a good drive the fluid was darkish again however this time it smelt sweet, I'm guessing its my Valvebody ( neutral or pressure solenoids are at fault). there are no codes stored, no oil leak, drives when it wants too so it leaves me kinda frustrated.

    Any help appropriated.

    Kind regards

Have you actually googled this problem?
I only ask as people are probably reluctant to reply when so much info is already available.
Depending on when/if your fluid has been changed may result in a new box.

    Thanks for the reply Biff,

I personally believe it is not the Box as it sounds like the issue which the adaptive box suffer whereby they do not come out of 'limp home mode' or have troubles selecting gears which usually pin points to the S1 or S2 solenoids.

Well I will be changing the Valve body when I know how to remove the blasting thing, looked underneath and notice the subframe blocks the Valve body, so that attempted was ultimate epic fail.

I goggled this for a week and most if not all suggest to drive up on a ramp and drop the subframe, Is there any other way other than dropping the subframe to remove the Valvebody?

    thanks again

The blackness comes from the burnt oil / clutch packs afaik.

Looks like you'll need a new box or manual conversion.
