    black smoke

Hi seems im only on here when im after something but once again im needing some advice lol.
My R has been running a bit strange recently and I think its getting worse. On occasion when at high revs and full boost the car seems to stutter a bit, like its stalling but its still accelerating then yesterday it did it quite badly then a huge plume of black smoke came out the back. Surprised the hell out of the drivers behind me lol.
I'm hoping its nothing serious but I am worried what it could be so any advice would be great folks. Cheers

Black smoke usually sign of runing rich unburnt fuel etc, maybe worth checking fuel Pressure reg, one way to check drop the oil and see if there signs of fuel in it.

Would that cause the stuttering effect when on boost?

First thing to check would be the air filter, if it's blocked or covered in crud it'll give you poor running and black smoke.

Spark plugs blowing out hence unburnt fuel = black smoke

    Hi,

I would suggest black smoke is a by product of running too rich at that particular time, and if its during boost I would be looking at blocked air filters or hoses collapsing during boost, ie a vacuum from the turbo so inlet side. The fact you are getting black smoke means its burning it all.

White smoke would be indicative of lost spark and unburnt fuel!

    Just my opinion though!

When your at high boost the spark isn't strong enough to make the jump, best and cheapest is to throw a set of genuine volvo plugs in, when did you last change them and what boost you running?

Ngk plugs and the boost needle goes off the scale. Its at that point the car does that stuttery thing.

Black smoke = running rich, as you said the boost is off the scale so you either running a mbc and it`s wound to max or you are running the wrong injectors for the map (have you had it mapped ?)

No idea what injectors it has but it has a different ecu. How's its mapped I don't know. I don't believe it has any other electronic devices fitted.

If memory serves me right you should have white injectors.

my s70r was missing on full boost I took it into Volvo turned out to be distributer cap it had a cheap one on quick upgrade to a genuine Volvo and all sorted so I'd go with some kind of spark issue aswell

Either way, it would run lean though rather than rich.

If the ecu is set up for oranges (for example) and the car is running blues (for example) then it would run rich.

Oranges flow 315cc @ 3 bar basic adjustment factor 1.0

Blues flow 347cc @3 bar basic adjustment factor 0.906

True, but it should have whites, so unless it has been fitted with greens it's unlikely to be the injectors.
