If you do this though, you'll need to re-think clutch master cyl (if running hydraulic clutch and manual) - you could use an aftermarket cyl and/or pedal box here and mount on the inside of the cabin.
It may also be worth re-thinking the brake booster if you plan to run a very elaborate exh manifold.

There are a few different 240 steering columns, with the knuckle in different places from different years that you could make use of when you're chasing exhaust system clearance.

Obviously you wont run a head mounted dizzy as it just wont clear.

Having the engine on the slant also frees up some space on the intake side too so you can get creative there.

If you go vertical though, you can make use of a B20 sump for clearance but you're then thinking about mounts, etc.

I'd personally go slanted and I'd go with a real ECU rather than a hobbyist ECU like Megasquirt.

Looking forward to some progress pics!
I know it doesn't 100% need to be vertical but as im sure as you know it frees so much spare room up.
also custom making some engine mounts, altering the pick up tube and making a adapter plate for the gear box is not much work for us and much cheaper and simpler than having to fit either a new pedal box or farting around with a custom clutch set up and also with it being vertical It will give me more clearance for the steering rack which also save time and money messing about with different steering columns and trying to source them.

I will be looking into fitting a slim brake servo and as I have lots of room on the intake side I can make a custom inlet or I may look into the cosworth manifold.

I need to have a talk to a decent tuner with regards what way to go for the ecu as it will be near enough the same as a cosworth so ill see what they recommend and what they use, what would you call a real ecu?

Pic's will be here but may me awhile as ive still got to finish the gull and then this project will be put on the back burner while I source parts and another 240.

There's definately pros and cons of both and if you're not using a Volvo gearbox, mounting vertically can make a lot of sense.

Regarding ECUs, Autronic SMC and Motec M84 are fairly well featured and not rediculously expensive.
The Haltech E6X was quite popular a few years ago and was very good, but has been discontinued for some time - there is still some good support out there for it though.

If you find an early 960 there get the 1041k axle off it. Meant to be a little bit stronger than the 1041 mainly on the 2litre Wentworths.

There's a nice set of galaxy alloys on a white motor and a decent set of comets too on a reddish motor.
