obd1 doesnt have a socket its got a box on the front of the ecu cover with a fly lead that you plug into the relevent sockets to get the codes, Obd 2 has a obd socket undre the coin holder in the centre consul.

Being N reg 95-96 it could be either but im pritty sure it will be obd2, lift up the coin holder and the socket is under that

Well, this may be a total newbie question, but can someone point out where it should be as the coin holder in centre console seems pretty secure and doesn't want to come out, or is there some disassembly required? Am I looking in the wrong place?

Thanks buddy, there was a block there, googled it and got this http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/read-codes-volvo-850
    On A2 I got
    1-2-1
    4-1-4
    2-3-2
    2-3-3

Most of them may be from before a replaced a vacuum hose that has detiorated so much it had broken off

Got a few lengths of silicone vacuum hose to fit tomorrow.
Cleared them off for now, will see what comes back on. That system is loads easier than Vida.
