Thumbs up Bonny's D.I.M Lighting - nice simple job.....

There were some blown bulbs on the D.I.M on the S60 and although not exactly a critical job it's just one of those cheap little niggles that I decided to take care of.

Firstly, the funny part! I went to the Main Stealer and manage to have the entire parts department scratching their heads because not even VIDA properly explained what bulbs I needed, it was very vague given there are 3 different colour codes, blue, grey and black. They are all a different wattage and it wasn't clear how many of each bulb type were needed.

So with that, I went home and whipped out the D.I.M before taking it back to the Main Stealer and literally handing it to the Parts guy and saying, "There we are, should make things a bit easier now". After a consultation with one of the workshop Technicians they managed to work out what they were supposed to order. I'd already decided to change every light bulb in the D.I.M given that where one is going then the others are usually not far behind, so ordered every bulb in the D.I.M.

They ordered me a job lot of bulbs and today I got around to changing them, it all works brilliantly now and all one uniform brightness. I believe they call this 're-lamping' and it's a good bit of preventative maintenance as well.

Incidentally, for some reason the 'blue' colour coded bulbs come as just the bulb itself, you have to take the old bulb out of the holder and then slot the new one in. The grey and black ones come with new holders. Don't ask me why this is because not even the Main Stealer knew!

    Pictures.....

Old bulbs in place before removal, showing positions of bulbs

Old bulbs removed including those from the 'blue' holders

New bulbs from Volvo (13 in total)

These fit in the 'blue' holders

D.I.M now refitted with new bulbs. Job done!

I remember you mentioning it in the advert when you were selling it (IIRC). That's all it was Duane, just a £2.00 light bulb.

A lot of the issues you listed with the car really aren't that problematic and easily fixable which is why I'm still happy with the car.

Just on a side note, the clutch, although worn, doesn't seem too bad and there's some life in it yet. The front wheel bearings badly worn though, the drivers side being very badly worn and theses I shall do next month along with the brake flexi-hoses that you kindly supplied.

    It's coming together mate.

I'm on break even point at the moment Colin, the fuel saving equals the repair costs. I'm working overtime this month at work and some of that extra cash will be going in to the repairs. It's not exactly breaking the bank is it, and once I've tackled these last couple of jobs then the car will be good for a good for a fair while longer.

I see the D5 as an investment, long term I will save money and my fuel bill this month has been dramatically lower than when using the T5.

So, you're telling me you've saved £600 in fuel since you've owned the car?

the clutch pedal feel was the main reason for swopping to Messerschmitt. My bro was getting fed up of the Bimmer being sat on the garden, & i wasn't prepared to gamble how long the S60 clutch would last so decided to swop while i had the spare car to do so. Its only costing me 7p a mile more on fuel so can't complain

    glad your happy with it

No, don't be so silly. And why £600? The car set me back £300, the bits and pieces so far around £150. You're trying to make me out to look foolish with this IMHO, but it just won't work Colin. I said this is a long term investment so give it chance.

You don't set up a business and necessarily expect to make a profit in the first 1 - 2 months, it takes time for the business to pay off after the initial outlay. Same principle here my ole' mukka!

It's a good car, the engine is great and for 163bhp it pulls nicely and smoothly. There's a few wear and tear issues which I can, and am, fixing myself. There's plenty of life left in it yet.

Car = £300, cost of bits £150, tax? £100, insurance? £50, must be around £600 in my mind.

Tax and insurance are a legal requirement regardless plus insurance is spread out over a year and soon tax will be too. Oddly, so it fuel usage and maintenance. Over a year I will see a saving, and that's what's important.

Anyway, this is supposed to be a thread about some light bulbs, the bit about the wheel bearings was just a side note.

When you say VIDA didn't show what bulbs you needed, did you mean VADIS? as VIDA only covers mechanical/electronic diagnostics, and doesn't give part numbers.

Yes, the parts bit. VIDAS then is it?
