Exclamation Bonny's totally knackered o/s Driveshaft (shocking)!!

I took the driveshafts off the S60 yesterday and revealed this........ To my horror, the whole o/s inner CV joint fell apart like a piece of meringue as soon as I took the outer CV joint from the stub axle. You can see evidence of 'flinging' of the axle grease that's built up on the subframe and around the area of the CV joint. I also found one of the ball joints was knackered too.

Anyway, car is basically repaired although I've got one 'snag' to investigate before I take it out on the open road again.

By the way, I've fitted a pair of new driveshafts and lower ball joints to the car now.

CV boots shouldn't the cable tied on, I guess the last garage did a cheap repair on it and didn't clean it out properly when the boot was changed little bit of grit does a lot of damage.

To be honest Harvey, I don't know why anyone would repair a driveshaft unless it's a complete remanufacture, and a repair of that nature by the garage you mentioned is just cowboy. If a driveshaft is shot then I'm always inclined to replace it completely, it's not worth the hassle for what is not that difficult a job in reality.

Just looking at the photo, I'm not sure that's a cable tie. I've got the parts outside so I'll take a look but I'm sure these half shafts are the originals. In that case it's a just wear and tear of old parts resulting in complete failure of the inner joint.

Reconditioned ones are around £100 a side so would of thought brand new ones would be over £200 each.

thats all well and good James, you try getting a new or recon driveshaft for a P1 V70 ME7 turbo. Dealer only and at £800 per side forget it. Yes you can get the originals rebuilt but that means at least 1 week off the road. Pre ME7 cars no problem, P2 cars no problem, but mine not a chance

I feel sorry for Pedro , he has sold this car as warts'n'all and James is just going to make a massive issue of every thing he has to do to this car, he was told not to buy it so I have sympathy for what he has to replace or how much it costs him, just sad to think of the bandwidth and amount of storage, of this useless info will take up and cost the forum....

I have no problem replacing CV joint ends and have no issues with cable ties.
They have very little difference than the metal straps as far as torque and grip...

Did I miss something as I didn't think he was complaining.
James if you had written posts like this before you wouldn't have had such a hard time.
    Keep up the good work.
    Just my take on things

You're right, I'm not complaining. I'm sharing my experiences with the car and what I'm personally achieving as well so I'll keep posting.

Adrian, I came to quite like you but you're turning more like Claymore every time. Just leave it please, I've done a good job here, learned some new skills and saved a packet it garage labour.

I'll be doing a full write-up with more photos when I've got a couple of hours spare.
