What oil are we all using?

I'll be doing an oil change next week, on the car it says Castrol 0-30.. I'd happily use this but I've read elsewhere that it's not best for the engine but gave no real alternatives!

I've done a search but no joy!

Strange this one!.......as my V70 T5 when i bought it had Comma fully synth in it and it ran like a bag of spanners sounded horrible .......i changed it to my favourite oil Castrol Magnatec 10W 40 Semi synth and it transformed the motor so quiet and more performance.

Maybe my mileage was right for it at 159,000.......5 30 grade is for newer engines.....

If that was in your 97 v70, then 10-40 Castrol magnatec was the recommended oil.
the dodgy ones are the 01-03 cars because Volvo changed all the oil recommendations in 02/03 when the d5 came out and they went big with Castrol because they needed an 0w30 oil to suit it and ford recommended Castrol.

so - if you had a 03 s40 2.0 petrol like my dad's it had 10w40 semi syn. in it from new but then all of a sudden they started recommending a 5w30 fully at twice the price!
the same applied to others like the first petrol s60's and p2 v70's

As above, having 212K on mine, it runs lovely on good 10/40.
However, I hear it's supposed to increase the likelihood of PCV blockage, especially on ME7 engines, although my PCV has been fine since I cleaned (not replaced) it 3 years ago.

Castrol gtx 5w30. The one with recommended by Ford on it. A3/B5 or something like that. I'm not going in my garage at this time of night.
Your handbook will say what's recommended at time of manufacture.

That was my point, it says 0-30, and says it on a sticker too...

But have been advised that a tuned engine should be running a thicker oil.. 5/40 obviously slightly thicker at cold and hot..so it's what I'm tempted to use.

I can’t see any brief explanation on the net…but….is the point of using 40 grade oil instead of 30 this:

Volvo boffins determined the approximate range of operating temperatures and selected an oil grade that would give the correct viscosity to protect the engine.

If you are running higher boost, using the car harder, whatever – the operating temperatures might be a little hotter than Volvo expected, so the 30 grade might be a little thin at these higher temperatures, so 40 grade would be a closer match to the viscosity Volvo had in mind (at these higher temperatures)

But you won’t be thrashing it everywhere so most of the time you’’ll be driving about with slightly thicker oil than you should be……doesn’t sound right to me or have I got it wrong

I just checked on the site below and even in Qatar, where right now it is 44 degrees outside, Shell say use 0W/30...for an S60R that is
    http://lubematch.shell.co.uk/qa/en_GB/browse

(lube match.....sounds like a dating agency)

    edit

just noticed early S60Rs are listed as 5W/30, later cars are 0W/30

+1 in the T5, retains good oil pressures when very hot.

For the past few years, since my turbo failed, I've run fully synthetic 10-40 in the D5. The Fuchs oil with pictures of trucks and diggers on the bottle

    Here's a good reference...

    http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/pdf/Volv...rt2007UKv5.pdf

Looks like 0W/30 or 5W/30 for the later Rs

    I may use a 5/30 then..

Tbh I rarely give it any beans, if I do it's only for an overtake. So I doubt it's getting hot enough to need a thicker oil.

As someone else said above, if I used a 5/40, 99% of the time I'd be using the wrong oil.

That was me, on a Tuesday afternoon ramble. Don't trust me.

I am wondering about 40 grade for here though...in that Shell site I posted above is does list Helix 0W/40 as an option for the early Rs
