    850R upgrade q's

    Hi
    I have a '96 850R and was hoping to understand / hear from people on the following ;

    1. when replacing/upgrading the standard turbo, is a 19t the 'approved' way to go or are there other/better alternatives ? Would a 19t bolt straight on?
    2. could someone explain what an me7 manifold is, if I have one, and do I need one ? !!

The car is an auto if that makes a difference ..

    Many thanks

Either a 18t or 19t with straight flange will bolt straight on. The ME7 manifold was fitted to later engines, and is freer flowing, then there's the Jap ME7 manifold which flows better still, and the S60R manifold which is better again.

its an auto so not really much point other than bolt ons and a generic remap, 16t is plenty good enough

Thanks for thoughts and offers of hardware.
It was more about what would / wouldn't work and give a justifiable benefit above what I have, as well as what will bolt straight on. As its an auto, it seems as if the items discussed here would be overkill and not really needed ??

    cheers

The standard ME7 exhaust manifold is the same as the pre ME7 manifold, it's the jap manifold and the S60R manifolds that flow better.
The ME7 inlet manifold is supposed to be a good upgrade when coupled with a 3" throttle body. A 3" downpipe with decat or race cat will work wonders after a remap too.

It might sound boring, but having been in the same situation before, start off with a stage zero tune. Before you start bolting on new bigger bits, make sure you have a good base.

s60r manifold and a remap mate is the way to go after a stage zero. make sure your auto fluid is in good condition too

Appreciate your various thoughts/comments .. cheers.
The stage 0 advice is sound nealevo ; I always change the oil, filter, plugs, fuel filter etc regularly. BSR filter also cleaned at service time. The leads, cap, rotor are good. Cambelt, aux belt ,water pump, idler, tensioner done recently. In terms of PVC and hoses etc, yes, these may need looking at by a professional but I have no symptoms and do not suspect anything wrong. As soon as I can find someone I have complete confidence in ( and this is basically why I got tired of the 'aftermarket' some years ago - had enough of the chat between the guy in Kent, guy in Surrey and guy in Worcs as couldn't make a conclusive judgement call ), I'll look into furthering the stage nought.
@ MRP ; The car has a 3 inch dp but standard tb. Please could u explain the 'std same as pre me7' part as u lost me a bit there ! Cheers
@merc85 ; Understand this has probably been dtd, but when u say remap, is this a genuine, bespoke map and not just a generic thing? My car has a Rica304 for reference. Would the S60R mani bold on with no mods ? Could you also expand re the auto fluid ? Whats involved and do u have any idea of costs involved (assuming a garage carries out the work? ).

    Thanks

Just because it's auto doesn't mean you can't still do the usual mods that most manuals have done. Provided your careful with the transmission and its in good shape to start with of course. As Merc85 has said make sure the fluid is in good shape and when you change it get the best you can afford, it may also be worth considering fitting an auxiliary autobox oil cooler if you drive the car hard or want more than a stage 1 car.....

Sorry to hijack thread, but andy have you had much experience with the additional oil cooler???thinking of this myself for ours. Not just because of a hike in power but we intend to tow with her next year so it is a must

Thanks Andysr .. I agree that there seems to be no real reason why I shouldn't upgrade as per manual g/box. The reality is that I do not drive the car hard at all and any additional mods will be to make the best of the car I have. If the manifold ( or any other upgrades ) make the car drive 'better' I will consider them accordingly. Have posed questions to a couple of the other posters on the thread re g/box and whats involved, manifold fitting, bespoke maps etc ; will see what they have to say and see where we go from there.

Any suggestions of garages I could use that know 850's ? Any old school mechanics in the south east that understand these cars properly members could recommend pls?

I believe RT mechanics are supposed to know their stuff, may be worth contacting Judgeninja, as he's used them. (as have others)
