The 4 pots do better on fuel than the 850/P1 70 T5's when driven gentle but do drink when booted hard. The normally do good 30MPG but can do better, mixed driving tend to be around 25
My 740 Turbo gets low 20's even if driven slowly mate, my r is much better on fuel

Have you checked what the fuel mixture is doing? Sounds like it is running on the rich side

You need a 940. My 98 2.3 lpt and 95 2.3 lpt with 15g both do over 30 mpg driven gently and I have seen over 35mpg when in full grandad mode.

However the one with the 15g doesn't get driven slowly as often

Its not that hard to update to the 940 engine management but if you are going to the effort then a megasquirt conversion would be the way to go

T5Frankie Go estate 940 and put a 740 front end on

I had a lovely lowered silver GLE saloon about 15 years ago. Lovely car but thin rods and older is not worth the hassle - or the fuel bill!!!!! Unless your 740 is just a toy and fuel doesn't matter.
