    AWD failure s60r

Noticed in the wet two days ago at the lights went for a quick take off and only the front wheels were working.no warning lights no traction control lights.the guy behind must of seen the awd badge and had himself a chuckle.i have a service kit ordered for 113 wich includes the splined sleeve that is meant to be a weak point.if all else fails its the angle gear.went to p.v dobson volvo for a diagnosis very good service as always.the car has done 120.000 miles and seeing as its going to be in bits anyway is it worth the expense aka £800 just get it replaced then i can be worry free for a while :/

What is the £800 for, replacing the sleeve, or the angle gear box?

They wanted 852 for the angle gear unit if it was buggered but it may just be a the nackered splined sleeve.

The sleeve kit is 113.when i changed the engine oil two weeks ago i saw no leaks at all.but since the issue i noticed the other day there is gearbox oil (very dirty gear oil) coming from the angle unit.

I have just had this done. Yes you could just go for the sleeve replacement, I think this May have been an option but I just got the whole thing done, in the knowledge that this will last for the life of the car in terms of how long I am likely to keep it for. Volvo garage price was 1500 inclusive of VAT and they applied some discount, angle gear was around 800-850 Mark, but this does not get you a new unit, only Volvos reconditioned, and they sent mine back to volvo somewhere, brand new you are looking at 2k. The whole job took around 4-5 hours, but they had some issues removing the angle gear as it was fused, so could have done it quicker I guess. I think I could have got this done a little cheaper maybe with a volvo independent specialist, some are on here, in hindsight I should have shopped around a bit in terms of price, but would only go to volvo or recognised specialist for this, whatever way you cut the mustard it's an expensive job, for the level of driving I do I bit the bullet and got the whole thing done and there is a noticeable difference in the car which is very smooth now

Jimmie, complete invoice breakdown from Volvo Gatwick.
Part 36000340 Angle Gear exchange £852
    Part 31256246 service kit £113.50
    Labour £294.00
    So with 31.50 added 1291.00 + VAT 258.00 total 1549.20
They checked reversing light and mended poor connection £31.50

    Hope this helps.
