    18T turbo

i have aquired one of these, now there seems to be quite a lot of side to side movement but no movement up and down if that makes sense, is this normal with no oil?? it was sold to me as a good turbo, if the worst comes to the worst i will get it hybridized realistically what are these capable of?

    cheers

Hard one to call, i've had 2 18's and both times I just paid to have them rebuilt, i reckon the best way is to buy a.knackered one for 40 quid then pay 350 odd to have it rebuilt, least you know it's sorted then but all depends on your build criteria..... no offence meant and i dont mean you but some people throw "performance " bits at a car turn the boost up and expect it to be reliable day in day out then wonder why it isn't lol,

My original 18T was the same, ran perfect no smoke or noise but on removal it had a lot of play when moved side to side.

A little up and down is ok, oil will fill the space, in and out isn't. Very easy to rebuild yourself if your confident enough

had the car in for its mot today and it flew thro no problem, he also rebuilds standard turbo's so got him to give it the once over and he has confirmed way too much movement so as and when funds permit i will get it hybridized at least that way i know it will be right from day 1 lol

    Hi Simon,
Remember the 18T i bought off someone on here ( i think originally came from Jamest5r via his friend ) and it had only done about 7,000mls after a refurb ........well when i received it i went onto a website (can`t remember which one) and it gave tolerances for these turbos.

Yes, they seem to move a lot on the hot side wheel but if you can get a 15 thou feeler guage down between the wheel and the side of the housing then this is perfect i believe the tolerance was between 14 and 16 thou when new.

Mine was a tight 15 with no up and down movement.

No smoke on idle or on boost and really howls on 21psi.........completely different sound to the ordinary 16T.

I run a 18t, had it rebuilt just incase as i had a little play in shaft, with supporting mods it ran 314bhp at 18psi, i run 20psi now so maybe a little more oomph.

well there is no point in putting the lower figure, if i wanted i could have just used the dodgey conversion chart and had more, but 12 runs between 311 & 314 seemed the better approach
