S60 D5 - Oily Build Up In Engine

Right so when i was faffing with the car looking for the battery in the engine bay i did notice quite a nasty build up of oily residue, i was hoping some of you could confirm if this is normal or a symptom of something worse, pics below

For a dirty diesel its normal to have black oil residue leaking out of somewhere!
the answers probably staring you right in the face but I'd say it may be leaking from the IC pipework around that jubilee clip.
Best thing to do is degrease the entire engine and drive to a jetwash for two reasons:

    1. You don't end up with all the black filth on your driveway and
    2. The engine is best warmed up to aid easier removal of the said black carbon residue.

Then I'd drive it home, remove and inspect the jublilee clip and more importantly, the hose and check for any splits, tears, cracks etc. Refit and monitor it.

Other than that, I wouldn't worry too much.

Yup, as Lee says, a good clean then keep an eye out for any leaks.

Judging by the bolt in the end of the vacumn (since when is that not have you spell vacumn) pipe to the engine pad the whole engine bay could do with a stage zero which face it isn't so hard on a dirty D5. Looks to me like you have a split intercooler pipe and a split engine pad, I can't imagine the horrors that lurk in the EGR mixer pipe... a definite double glover

The black plastic engine cover just pulls off no tools required, remove it to see if you can see any white smoke leaking when the engine is running.

Can't really add to the above other than to say the battery's under the boot floor.
