Ok final post on this subject re the knocking sound, especially as it has got progressively louder over the last week since i have had the car returned for Bevel Gear, took into Volvo spent some time with engineer and discovered passenger side bottom ball joint has had it, other side is fine, top mounts re torqued and okish as well as front wish bone bushes again okish for now. I try and avoid the pot holes, but i travel up and down the country and i am telling the roads are horrendous, i know i have hit some which doesn't help. So Car goes back into Volvo tomorrow morning for ball joint and that should be the end of it!

I'm pretty confident this is a VVT issue.
The engine physically rattles briefly on start up only when hot.
It's so bad it's causing the start up to delay.

I must stress to you again Terry that this is a priority and you must get it looked at urgently!
I'm not really that clued up on the VVT side of things but I do know that they are very sensitive to grade of oil.
I really do think you need to explain it to the garage in more detail and show them the problem. It did it every time we started the car at mine and if that were my car I'd be worried.

Just have them replace the entire wishbone mate! They are not expensive and it will make a huge improvement to the steering feel. Plus there are two other bushes that always wear out. Pointless just replacing the lower ball joint!

ah Lee thanks for reminding me, so as you no today popped into volvo for lower ball joint issue after traveling back from the Midlands so the car was nice and hot, so just before testing for the knocking noise got him to start the car, and the physical rattle happened, and we did this repeatedly and again the rattle, this only happens when the car is hot and not cold!, he said he thought it may be the VVT pulley rattle, i tried to get him to commit a little bit more but no joy, he said the timing he thought was fine, i think if the VVT pulley was to go thats likely to be piston and valves and big problems and would write the engine off. So you are right i need this looking at, I may take to a Volvo Specialist listed on here around Guildford, or the guys you have mentioned.

The thing that would be worth doing is to test the the oil pressure when the engine is cold & again when the engine is nice and hot.
Then also test how quickly it builds oil pressure up from hot.
It could be the O rings in the sump that are leaking by and allow the oil to drain from the engine block & also cause the oil pressure to drop to low to get the VVT pulleys to change over as they should,as the oil is at it's thinnest when it's hot.
I do know volvo do say to test oil pressure when testing the VVT side of things

Update on VVT Pulleys, yes there is a slight rattle, Volvo mechanic and master technician have said best to monitor at this stage, replacement for x2 new pulleys £800.00 plus labour and would advise cam belt kit change, so i guess another 1-1.5k, the mechanic said that its my decision but given the expenses already paid, it would be ok to monitor and review again if it gets any worse, or at the next 12k service which for me will be around October/November time. So suspension sorted and no knocking noises, discs and pads on the fronts to change this week and i have replaced washer jets as they were popping out of the bonnet. So i need to recover now the last 2 weeks has cost a little under 3k.

Now you've had it confirmed, why not purchase the parts required from Volvo and then get your Indy to fit, or better still, get MRG Volvo to give you a quote. You'll need to speak to Simon Chu and tell him your a new mbr on VPCUK. Then they will be able to give you your parts discount and big labour discount. You might find they will do the job lot for less than £800. Expect 10% discount on parts plus labour rate at £65p/h.

Thanks Lee got quote from RT Mechanics Parts come in under £500 with labour and cambelt kit a little over £1000, so already big saving, as i think with current volvo in gatwick i would be looking at 1500. I don't know if any moderators can pick up this post, but i have spoken to MRG Volvo and they have said i need to contact the moderators who will then contact MRG to set up an account. If any moderator sees this can you possibly respond if i am eligible for this and help me set up an account to get VVT pulleys replaced with discounted price etc.

So far the Lee with the VVT issues the pulleys do need doing, and I have got a great quote from RT Mechanics, but i need some breathing space before spending out, it is urgent just due the potential destruction the pulleys can do to the engine if they fail, but Volvo themselves advised to keep a watchful eye on it. Suspension is all ok, but i have advisories on front shocks and steering rack which i can again keep an eye on between services which i think i will do 3 in a year. I may be paranoid but i do think i have an issue with the oil, i am topping up at around 2500 miles, but you can see from my last post, i can knock out 800 miles in one week and this is fast motorway driving and urban, so am probably doing the type of driving in 1 month many wouldn't do in 3-4 months. I can only assume that if RT are gonna change VVT pulleys and Cambelt, it may be advisable to look at PCV system while they are at it while every thing is out of the way in the engine bay, but i am now happy i have broken the back of it for now, i think i have a couple grand to spend yet but i can space this out i am hoping, I do think some of my expense can be reduced by not spending out on Volvo Dealership prices, for example Rt Mechanics quote for the pulleys is at around £400.00 Volvo dealership is £800.00 without compromising on quality. Overall i am very happy with the car it remains to be seen if the car can take the punishment i am going to give it, but its the price you pay i guess for a performance vehicle, but i have learnt a lot from yourself and others on here which has been invaluable and already helped me out a lot.

Have you tried Simon at MRG for a quote yet?
Even if they are slightly more expensive using genuine parts there backup if anything goes wrong afterwards is one of the best.
In my opinion they are the "best" that's why I travel the length of the country to go there .But that's just me.
    Do RT use genuine parts?

    Hi Jimmie,
Still trying to get through to MRG, but not quite worked out, LeeT5 has given me a contact, and will definitely check them out, Chippenham is not to bad to get to and I have heard nothing but good stuff about them, tried today but put on hold, but will get through eventually, I am actually in Swindon tomorrow so could probably get over and speak to them face to face.

    UPDATE please Terry!!!

Did you get the suspect VVT rattle fixed? Does your car still rattle on hot starts?

    Hi Lee
Yep Sorry here's the update on the Car. 1st just to say the car is generally going well! BUT there are niggles which to be honest I am just living with until they escalate to something serious.
    1. VVT rattle has seemed of settled a little, but you still get a rattle on start up, but have been advised if it becomes an issue of rattling on tickover, then it needs doing, but the car sounds sweet, I am checking oil and water regularly.
    2. Head Gasket/Liners, I am keeping an eye on the loss of water, I think I have to top up with volvo anti freeze once a month, temperature top dead centre on dial, I have been in heavy traffic, racing up and down motor way, but again keepin an eye on it.
    3. Bevel gear, you know I forked out 1500 or so on replacement, which needed to be done, but there is a knocking on changing the gears, I know the DMF can make some noise, but there is something else in the transmission maybe drive shafts?

I know you offered the sniff test which would be great, I am around Tuesday next week send me a message it would be good to catch up, if this fits in with your dairy

So general conclusion of R ownership, absolutely love the car, it's got 65k on clock now, but I think over next 12 months it's gonna need 3-4k on it, but I am holding off until I have to make the repairs. It's going in on Monday as I have codes 042, 081 and 018 showing so some more work to be done, but is a 10 year old car I guess

Check the bolts in the end of the driveshafts, they have a habit of coming loose.

    Hi Stribo,
I think LeeT5 kindly replaced new ones I bought for me and torqued them up, so not sure if this is it, I know I have some engine mounts/bushes that may need replacement, but this knock is different, low speed 1st to 2nd you here a clunk clunk sound?, I have been able with smooth changes to avoid the noise but now it's got progressively worse...
