V70 D5, Poor idle when cold and slight misfire at 1500rpm??

    Hi All,

My 2002 V70 D5 has had a replacement engine a week or so ago (95k engine), all bits and bobs swapped over from the old one (130k).
When started from cold, its as lumpy as hell for about 20-30 seconds then clams down. Once warm it starts normally BUT there is a slight
misfire at around 1500rpm. If i rev and hold it there you can feel it missing, but after that it feels ok?????

From what I've Googled, most have put it down to a duff injector. The only problem with this is I don't think it was there before the engine was swapped.
I've done the old "screwdriver to ear and injector" and number 4 and 5 sound more "hollow" that 1, 2, and 3.

Anyone had this before??? The car still drives lovely and is doing 40mpg around town.

    Cheers

    Paul
    Thankyou, Goodnight....much love

Before everyone else jumps on the Band wagon saying "It could be this, it could be that....", my professional opinion would be that due to the main components of the D5 engine being very expensive, namely Injectors, Diesel pump, EGR and the various sensors etc I would strongly suggest that you drive the car to a Diesel specialist who will be able to diagnose and consult with you and hopefully advise you on what is the cause of your problem and exactly how much it will cost you to fix.

Or, you could do what someone on another well known forum has done with a D5 and ask a similar question and instead of doing what I have just suggested you do, they listened to lots of ppl saying "it could be this or it could be that..." and so far they've bought a new Diesel pump, a full set of injectors, tried to diagnose the fault by listening to someone who didn't know what they were doing and that induced another fault......and the car still doesn't start!

Basically mate, the fact that lots of ppl have viewed this thread and not responded, kind of tells you something...doesn't it?

Sorry if that's not very helpful but I can see where this might go and you'll end up either making it worse, spends hundreds, if not over a grand trying to fix it or worse of all, end up with the car not starting at all.

Do yourself a favour, take it to a Good dealer or a Diesel center. High pressure diesel's are not to be messed with if you don't know what your doing.

The symptoms do sound like a injectors that leaking fuel. For that reason im with lee. Take it to a diesel specialist and theyll do a leak ofc test on the injectors. In the past ive took the electrical connection off a injection to see if the missfire gose. Pritty much like youd do with a ht lead.

Im glad its not just me that gets annoyed and frustrated when people jump in and say the first thing that enters there head. To many sugestions cause they read it on a another thread. If you have no experience of the issue its best to keep quiet.

Get the glow plugs tested only takes 5 mins.

As lee says ,get a proper Diesel workshop to look at it and if you can let them have it for a couple of days so they can test it from a cold start.

If the above is for me....in the 'D5 not starting thread' first post where I said check the low pressure pump I also said get 'someone' to look at it. And I only said check a few things. I didn't recommend changing anything out, that came from the dealer.

Sorry for thread hijack, Liddo, hope the specialist can confirm what it is!

Not aimed at anyone james but in general. Look at how many people had opinions when grahams v70 wasnt running right. All guess work and non fact.

You're not wrong. If I ever do make any comments I try to make it clear it is just guessing, cos not only I am not experienced compared to some, on top of this usually I've never seen the car being discussed. And any advice I get myself I take with a pinch of salt. It's down to the owner to do his research and if it gets out of his depth, best way is to physically go to someone who knows the score as has already been said.

I wonder what happened with the repair on the other D5.....LP pump, then HP pump, then injectors....as Lee said above

TBH when trying to diagnose a fault on-line, there's always going to be a certain amount of guesswork, even the most simple of problems can have more than one cause. It's down to the OP of any problem thread to read through all the ideas, disregard what he is 100% sure it can't be then choose a cause of action for testing for the other suggestions, be that themselves, or at an indie/dealers.

I know this was some time age, but it would be nice to know what the fault was???? I have a similar problem, but am in France, it is very difficult to get this diagnostic here, so perhaps a little help in one direction might help?? Thanks.
