Solid tappets. The R ive just bought is the same when its warm. I think the tappets need shimming.

Great I assume that's not an easy or cheap job. Do you think it's worth doing an engine flush and putting in a semi synthetic oil rather than the fully synthetic I have just put in. That's when I started noticing it. These cars are expensive to maintain. still love it though
Id say its a head off job. Could be done with out removing head but id get a cylinder head specialist to do it. If it was me id just use volvo spec oil. What milage has yours covered

Yes, you do have solid tappets which are adjustable but not by "old school" means with a spanner and feeler guages.
Each actual bucket tappet is a different size and has to be removed to be measured and then replaced with a thicker or thinner one depending on the gap when first measured before it was taken to pieces.
It is a £££££££ and expensive job and really should be taken to the dealer where they have all the facilities for ordering all in one go.
The best thing to do first to try and remedy it is put back in a semi synth such as Castrol Magnetec 10W 40 which is a superb oil at quietening engines due to it`s stick on clinging qualities. I have used it for years with good results......

Lots of tears and f words, I had to remove the turbo also not the best job in the world and I took it to a machine shop, the spent a whole day drilling them out and re-tapping. It was an emotional couple if days
I am sure you will be fine, I Blame myself for this. Not really sure where I went wrong maybe a small propane torch and a lot if wd40 would help. Sure there will be guys on here that have a really easy way to do it.
It's not the changing of the pipe that bothers me, it's snapping the bloody bolts off the turbo
If I knew I could get a drill in there to remove the bolts, I'd be a bit happier but I doubt it.

Got an old discovery now.
Use plenty of plus gas, when I took the dp off the cabbie, they came straight off no problems, and that's older than yours.
Soak them im wd40 then befor you remove them heat them with a butane torch. Or even better get them cherry red at work remove them refit with copper grease. If run a tap down the hole first if you can.
