I think it's the same box in a T5. The non-T5s will probably fit also but have different final drives

I've got the same one in my S70 T5. I've also got another AW42 auto box from a 2.0 litre to go in it at some point - AFAIK they are all the same box but like I said with different final drives. R and T5 final drive are the same

Do a stall test to check the torque converter.........put in bottom gear with the handbrake and footbrake on and go WOT the revs should only rise to about 2500 and then stall the engine.......only do it once or twice in succession as the oil may overheat!

Also not sure but an auto 3 or 4 speed box usually has an overdrive and needs a relay for it to go in .......maybe the relay has gone kaput so it stays in 3rd at 5000 revs.!!!

It is an Asin 42/50 box,you might have the sludge on the torque converter teeth from poor maintenace making it slip so drain the fluid from the sump and see if you find any metal dust or particules in the fluid and refill with the same amount and do it the same thing every 50-100 miles, its called a stage fluid change which is a gentle way of flushing rather than shifting all the crap in one go that may result in g/box replacement.

If you're just doing a flush then get the cheapest that you can find. I'm doing the same to my two V70Rs - just bought 25L of carlube dexron III for £65 which I'll use to flush them out, then I'll get some decent stuff in a few 1000 miles and flush the cheapo stuff out with that.

Re the sources, I have a trade account with MotorWorld which is where I've got the cheapo stuff from. I'll be using AMSOIL as the 'proper' ATF later on - its rather expensive... I paid over £120 for the stuff when I did my old 850R a few years ago.
    Currently - '96 850R auto

    Previously - '97 S70 T5 manual, '98 V70R AWD auto, '98 V70R Auto in Nautic Blue Mica with LPG (went to Germany!), 1996 850R Auto, lots of various 940s, 960s and a crappy 850 2.0

That's promising, get a flush changed and on the final flush use the best oil you can, 70 series cars with the AW42's are recommended to have Dextron III oil

Unfortunately the direct engagement of the torque converter, the overdrive function if you will, is controlled by the ecu not a relay like earlier cars.
